Monster Chopper

The Sterling Pound exchange makes these type of knives impractical (Woodlore, Bayley and this one). Excellent designs though. We can have one of our makers here come up with something similar.

The handle shape is not the same but this knife looks like the Parang John "Lofty" Wiseman was going to bring into production but he said UK laws stopped it! I put on the Rat and Becker forums that an American Company needs to make that tool. I hope a good company will make something like this tool. I did a Money Conversion and the Knife is over $400.00 US Dollars and the sheath was about $80.00 if I remember right.

I really like it. His chopping technique needs some work though. I have to think that a monster like that in a quality steel would still be pretty spendy even made by one of the custom makers on BF, that's a big chunk of steel.

If you go to his web page he is in a picture with Lofty Wiseman, so I think that Parang is purely inspired by his association or acquaintance with the Lofty.

Regarding the price, $400 is a big chunk but how much does a Fehrman, Busse or a custom piece is worth these days? How much does a custom axe costs?

Look at this

I'm not trying to compare merits on the design, just to make a price comparison.

What is carbon 75? doesn't look like a super alloy (nor does it need to be) just curious.
The handle looks very comfortable btw.

Yea Abe's design is cheaper and I like it more. I recently picked up a parang for under $100 from Valiant Co.; it's the Sumatra Parang Bandol model. I just need a better sheath as it's a wooden slip sheath.

Valiant says their blades are made from "Spring Steel"...so I'm not sure exactly what it is or how the heat treatment is; however, my Golok has withstood a lot of chopping and held up well. The full convex grind on this parang is quite impressive and it's a hefty and effective shoppper. I do like the more pointy end on Abe's and the you-tube version.

Nice piece. Is the handle out of horn? I have always wondered how durable it woud be. Like the shape. You could relax your grip while using with that handle design.

I HAVE to get one of those Valiants, I've been reading about them for years with positive comments most of the time. Are they full tang?

This is something I drew up a while ago, what do you think?

Looks a good tool but I'd rather have my JK Knatchet fot doing finer work as well as chopping !

I've also almost pulled the trigger on a Valiant a few times. The horn handle has probably been the thing that stopped me, also not knowing how the tang is. I think most of the times when you see just "spring steel" listed as the steel, it's 5160 being used.

The tang in Valiant blades is heated to cherry red then inserted into the horn handle actually melting it. It also has a hole in the tang that gets filled in this way. I'd say that is a functional and robust stick-tang construction and I'd have no problems using it hard.

I also dig Caine's survival tool, it's a design I've been studying some recently and I'd love to try one out. Too bad I'm so poor ha ha ha! :)

Why he said it I don't know, but it's not true.

I think what he means is the draconian/ultra restrictive knife laws in UK makes it difficult to own or maybe commerce with it.
