I haven't posted round here in a while and I frequent some other forums pretty often. I got a link to this vid from a 4x4 forum I'm a member of. This is aparantly part of the manufacturing process for some of the products being sold over there and lo and behold......... my god that's a big power hammer. So for your enjoyment.

Good to be back.

Thanks for posting. Hell of a hammer. Thought my 75 pounder hit hard but noooooooo.

I wonder what that billet weighs... dude must be pretty strong... hope they have hearing protection cuz that looks like it makes a big BANG!

AMAAAAZZING!!! So what were they spraying in the hammer before the primary blow that caused the huge burst of flame and smoke/steam? Was it the same stuff sprayed in the follow up blows? I ask that because it seemed like they were sprayed by different guys. Too bad they didn't show a shot of a finished hammered piece or two.

If you watch little power hammers doing forge welding they make the flames on the first hit as well, although miniscule in comparison. I think it's just scale.

I thought they may have been using a light spray of water that when it converts to steam blasts away scale/debris? Notice they don't really sweep scale off much.

Cool video. I'm attaching photos of the forge shop at Timken that I worked in many years ago.

Two more photos. I was the mechanic in this shop for about two years.

I used to run a press very similar to this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKvCA-uHiRE

to lube the dies, we sprayed in stuff called "dag". I looked like pudding made from graphite, we had to mix it with water. They told us it was safe, yes I'd get sick once a year and hack up black stuff--even though I wore the supplied protection.
I have a feeling these guys are useing a heavy grease to coat the dies so that part doesnt stick.
Oh I also saw a guy lose his hand in one

Scott, do you have larger versions of those photos? If so I would like to see them.

That's all I have. Sorry. I have memories of it though. The largest press had the hydraulics room under the floor. The acculators were massive. I can't remember the exact size in gallons, but they were the size of a full size van. The room for the hydraulics alone was approximately 100' x 100' and had three floors. It was a massive machine.
