l'm looking at a couple kitchen knives in their lineup. Obviously not inexpensive. My question being totally unfamiliar with the brand other than a Youtube following, for what you pay what do you get? I understand they offer lifetime free sharpening which is a slight plus.

They are good. But honestly I’d support one of the makers on here before getting a MKC, as I personally think the price exceeds the value.

Are they good quality knives, yes. But I think the makers on here are as good at the min. Better in general.

Just my nickel worth of thoughts since the penny are discontinued…

Fair enough. I can certainly appreciate a high quality knife, but I can't say I'm someone who is big into knives. How about a few referrals I can contact?

I’d suggest looking on the for sale page for fixed blades and see what style and components you like.
Based on that honestly just pick one, without wanting to list out names and forgetting one or two I suggest looking up the forum post about showing off BladeForums makers.

Depending on budget and knife size I believe CPK will have a sale this weekend of their Field knives honestly the BFK is a medium large knife however it’ll cost about the same as retail price on MKC and be 5x better in every factor.

Montana knives are decent, but for the cost you will get a better knife from several makers. You'll get much more detail with fit and finish and a better heat treat than you'll get from a mass production production ... in most cases.

You can go to the makers section for kitchen knives and see if something interests you and contact the maker.

You will need at least a basic membership (cost $10.00) to have private message priveledges on the forum. Or you may find many on social media or some have websites.

Just a few makers that I have dealt with and can recommend ...

Stuart Davenport Knives Stuart Davenport Knives

I've been waiting for a potato knife for like 8 years, several friends of mine on here who have them know I'm first in line if they ever sell lol

Yea, good luck getting one, I wouldnt even mention them as a recommendation considering you'll find a jar of hens teeth before acquiring a potato knife

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Or post a link?

Unfortunately I can't recall the exact post(s), but I've seen a post in particular where the tang had deep scratches from being profiled, and when the customer (a member on here?) reached out, they brushed it off as "normal"

Not trying to disparage MKC, just telling what I've seen

I have a friend who purchased a Meat Church. He told me that he likes it, but REALLY misses all that money he spent.
If you're gonna go in that direction, get something fun like Steelport....just my 2/5ths of a nickel.

Montana Knife Company is worth the money if you value high-end everyday kitchen knives with good edge retention and a classy look theyre well made feel solid in hand, and the lifetime free sharpening is actually a practical perk if you plan to keep them longterm. They’re not budget blades, but for quality and service you generally get what you pay for

MKC doesn't make the knives IIRC. They get the blanks cut/primary grind/heat treatment all done somewhere. Happy to be corrected if this is not accurate.
my understanding is that outsourcing was indeed a thing as they began to expand operations. They now do all that in house.

I see in FAQ they say:

"Our knives are made 100% in Frenchtown, Montana in the USA."

That seems like an odd way of saying they do it in house if so. Especially considering they are not located in Frenchtown. Also when Made In USA is the focal point of your brand and advertising...not being very clear about if it's your own company/someone else doing the majority of the work seems odd.

I also see on their site they have a little blurb about opening up a factory in Missoula where they are located with 150 jobs. I'm assuming that's to start manufacturing more themselves. And for the record I have zero issue with a company that outsources stuff especially to other American companies, it's just nice when you know more specifics as to where especially when made in the USA is the primary advertising feature.

Having owned both MKC knives, and knives from smiths here… I’m going to say go for here. Honestly it’s a bit of a gamble, but I’ve gotten much more value for my dollar here. YMMV.
