Montana Knife Company?

Hey everyone,

I’m new here. I was looking for a place to ask questions about blades and came across blade forums. I use my knife a lot and carried the same knife at work for many years the SOG Quake XL. It was a monster folder but it got lost in the trench, I work in the underground construction field. I came across a Montana knife company on Instagram and there was a lot of talk about a War Goat. When they drop they sell out immediately so I bought two black ones, but I’m a huge guy and they’re kind of small in my hands, but they seem to be a great knife. I was gonna give one as a gift to my brother-in-law, but I think I’m gonna end up selling both of them because I bought a microtech socom elite auto and I’m extremely happy with it. But I’m wondering about the Montana knife company.War Goat? It seems good quality and it’s lightweight but is a lot of hype and I don’t know much about the different blade materials and was wondering if the magnacut is actually a good material or not or did I get ripped off for $325 each? Just wondering, anybody’s thoughts on this MKC or is it a gimmick. I’ve never cut anything with the one I opened. Because I’m worried about ruining it since I’m thinking of selling them . Thanks

They're generally considered good but a bit high priced. It's worth considering what they consider an issue or not before buying; for example:
What the heck? That's nuts. I know MKC is a legit company, but what are they thinking? I've seen a fair number of cheapo Chinese and Pakistani knives that were way better in appearance than that knife.

And for the prices MKC is charging... No way any part of the blade should look like that. No way.

Definitely serviceable knives but $225 and up for a water jet cut, machine ground and cerakote spray painted blade with paracord wrapped handle? Waaay over priced.

My opinion, leave them for the public land hunter Sitka boobs and buy something quality here.

My opinion, when there is so much youtube/social media shilling, I tend to stay away.

There’s a ton of opinions out there and many are a better value.

OP, 1) I don’t understand why we need two threads on the same subject.

2) Also, you say you have two MKC knives in hand. How do they look, how is the fit and finish, are they sharp, etc. ? Do they have damage to the spine like some anonymous Reddit poster claimed (s)he came across ?

3) what do you mean by „It seems good quality and it’s lightweight but is a lot of hype“, please elaborate.

Thanks.

They are decent knives ... but imo a bit over priced and over hyped ... for the price tag you can get much better quality fit and finish from several of our makers here on BF and get something with a personal touch. And you get the pleasure of sharing your input and creating a blade with a maker that most times with have better heat treats and better attention to the details.

When they have growing pains like rushing knives out the door to fulfill orders before they've done good quality control and then call defects "fingerprints" I get a bad feeling. Besides that what knifemaker thinks anybody wants fingerprints on a knife? I bet most of us here carry a dedicated non-snotty hankie for wiping those off.

Looks like somebody batoned a knife with a hammer - which people do. The OP has two MKC knives and can check if they have marks like this.

Why would you believe a random Reddit post vs give an established knife company the benefit of the doubt ?

I have no stake in this, but there is a reason I'm not on Reddit, FB, etc. By default and unless there is proof, I will support a local knife maker ....

No need to believe the poster. The maker said it's their marks and expected. Their email about it is posted in the thread there

C chase.newsom91 don't you have a couple of MKC? What do you think about them?
Yessir. I have two MKC knives, so I might be able to help a little here. I have the Flattail and the V24, and I plan on ordering a Mini War Goat next time they’re in stock. Full disclosure / background here - I was introduced to this company via the James Reece books. I enjoyed the series, so naturally I was curious about some of the gear mentioned in the books. Fit and finish on these knives, in my opinion, is excellent. I have several other knives that I think many people on this Forum would consider excellent, e.g. David Mary and Chris Reeve, to name a few. The MKC Flattail, in particular, impressed me. It’s exceedingly light weight and sturdy. Extremely sharp out of the box. Ordering process, shipping, all that stuff was easy and I did not have any issues. Overall, I do think you pay a premium for this brand given its media exposure / online presence, etc., but I am pleased with these knives and I enjoy having them in my collection. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Chase. I figured you would have something to say about it.

I really like their Stonedgoat, if you're into ultralight fixed blades. I like the blade shape, and carry it a lot. I will say I think they're overpriced, but so are a lot of things now days. A $20 mora will do most of what the anyones high dollar knives do. A lot of us are looking for the "perfect" knife though.

Hasn't made one knife that has even tempted me!!!!!!!!!! Any guesses why😜

Nuthin really stands out about their product except marketing of it.....I spend next to no time online save BladeForums and or a quick Amazon order but their adds are always in my face🙄.......
