Moore Maker Knives

In 2004, I purchased a MM Buffalo Horn Hoofpick Knife for trail riding and around the barn. I like it so much that now I'm thinking about getting a 5202M with Mesquite handles.

Anyone have one of these? Also, who is making Moore Maker knives these days? How is the quality compared to knives that were made by Camillus?

AFAIK, Queen continues to make the bone handled and "better" MM knives.

I believe that Bear & Son is making most of the delrin handled knives. (I say "most" because I know that Queen made the large delrin handled sodbuster in the past.)

I called Moore Maker and found out that the Mesquite Trapper is made by Bear & Son. So how is Bear & Son's quality?

When Camillus went under and Queen was having trouble producing the quantity the market demanded, Moore went to Bear and they made many patterns for him. For the most part he has regretted that decision. Once you get a knife from a dealer, they are typically "almost" as good as the Camillus knives; but roughly 50% don't pass QA from what I am told.

Bear makes stag, horn, bone, composite, and wood knives for Moore. Queen makes stag, horn, bone, composite, and wood knives for Moore. Thus, the old logic is no longer true for knowing which is which (for a year or so). You are just better off calling them and asking them; or your preferred dealer before ordering. Typically anthing ending in "B" is a Bear model, but that rule is not consistent.

That Mesquite handled trapper pictured a the beginning of this thread is a Queen made knife, judging by the tooling. Bear's tooling is a LOT different.

I like that mesquite (prefer meat smoked or grilled with it)! Is the carbon steel used in the Bear knives noticeably different than the Queen knives as well?

Don't know about you but I was disappointed when I learned they were not made in Tejas....I bought a yellow stockman with leather punch back then....and soon as I heard they were made in the East, no mo.

Dude, ALL US-made knives are made east of me.

That mesquite trapper is made by Canal Street on their Moonpie Trapper frame. The mesquite is straight from the Mooremaker ranch, and was sent to Canal Street for handles in the form of small logs and branches:eek:. I saw a few o' those tree parts on the storeroom floor last year during a visit, along with a whole passel of nearly complete knives on trays:thumbup:

I bought a MooreMaker large bone handled stockman several years ago and it has been one heck of a good knife! Now, my wife bought me another Mooremaker this past Christmas and it looks good, but has the weakest backsprings I have ever seen. I still use it but it can't compare to that earlier stockman.

Neeman, definitely Canal Street (what, you don't believe me?:grumpy::D:D ), you can tell what knives Bear makes by the complete lack of handle pins. I think (not positive) that this particular mesquite handled model is the only one made for them by Canal Street.

Feel free to compare (scan's a little dark but should serve the purpose):

I don't know if they've ever done this sort of thing, but it sure seems like a business opportunity for Case. I mean, desperate times, desperate measures, right? And since they've been laying off team members, contracting knives for Moore Maker might be something to think about.

(What a shame, btw, that Bear can't get their act together on the QC front.)

Canal are putting some very nice wood handles out on the Half Moon, from Ebony to Olive wood. The best I see on the market.

Will they keep some mesquite for their Half Moons??

Interesting. I guess that's why I guessed Queen, since Canal uses Queen tooling on many of their patterns.

I thought that it looked like similar construction to a Canal St. I have. Doesn't Canal St. get some parts from Queen?
Any Bears I have seen don't have pins on either end of the scales.

*edit* I just read the rest of the posts. I traded for a Canal St. half moon in Ebony and it's drop dead gorgeous. Same type of pins. The clip blade has the same shape as my MM/Camillus stockman.
