Moose Antler Palm?
Anybody used the Palm section of a Moose Antler for scales?
Maybe folders?

Being a former Alaskan & having used a good bit of moose antler for handle material , I recommend using main beam & tines for handle material . Palm is generally too pithy .

It is generally not flat enough, You have to cut up a whole palm to get a few usable pieces out of it. It can be filled if too pithy and some of it is quite solid. I have done quite a bit of experimentation with cooking it and pressing it flat (with the idea of doing it commercialy) but have had mixed results. It can have a very pleasing texture, similar to Sambar stag.

Barry Wood showed me a folder he had made using moose palm for the scales. It was absolutely beautiful and one he stated he would never sell. Stated that he had carried it daily for over 20 years. He was one of the top folder makers, retired a couple of years ago.

I have a Barry Wood folder with moose for the scales but I don't know how to tell if it's palm or what part. May be you can tell me. Here is a picture:

It is hard to tell, as flat as it is I would say it is from the palm, but every moose antler is different and only he could say for sure.

I thank you for posting the photo, that is a nice knife and all Barry Wood.
