Moose bone handles

I was out in the woods today and found a pile of moose bones! They look like they've been sitting for about a year and I grabbed a couple femurs, some ribs, the pelvis, what appears to be little ankle bones(?). I was wondering if anyone on here could give me an idea of how to make knife scales or handles from them? I've got a fixed blade I wouldn't mind practicing on but I've never worked with bone before. Is there any special way to prepare or treat them? They are hard as hell so I assume there are special techniques for shaping and cutting them. Also, I assume the solid outside part is what I'm going to be using and not the spongy part inside. Once I have them shaped and attached, how do I finish them? Thanks in advance!

you use the same techniques to shape wood as you do bone. wear old clothes and a mask when working it. It'll stink to high heaven

Awesome. How about finishing? Clear coat, varnish, epoxy, wax? Anything I should look out for?
