Last week the moosehunting seaon started in north Sweden. When moosehunting I live on my farm and there also my mother has a house so I brought Olle, my 5 year old son with me so he could be free from kindergarden that week. He thinks its teriffic to stay with his grandmother, they pick berrys, dig up potatoes, taking a walk, and he can have his fixedblade mora scoutknife with him. He can be a knifenutseed as he realy likes them.
When its good wather he can come along into the forest with me and one afternoon the last week we sat on a rather high mountain. He was thilled about it, but after 1/2 an hour he got a little boored and we had some tee and lemonade and bread. I was cuting some dryed meat with my Case trapper and he was realy interested in how it looked and how it worked. After the meal to prevent him from geting boored and mabye talking loudly I showed him how to use a slipjoint and what is not wise to do with it. He seamed to understand and I let him wittle by himself with the trapper superwising on a distanse, wittling a little myself with my Case medium stockman from another pocket.

As we sat there the dog started barking and I could hear it was mooving right our way. I stood on my feet to be ready and just secounds later a calf came running in about 60 meters distance. I couldnt shoot as the dog was rigth beside the calf trying to make him stop, and after some secounds more it has run into deep forest again. I turned to Olle to ask him if it was exiting to see the moose but to my true amaizement he just sat there wittling, so concentrated on his work he didnt even notice the huntingadventure. He made two sticks of thin wood that he gave to his mother when she and my older son joined us for the weekend, very proud of what he had prodused with that knife. I realy like bringing my boys to activitys. Later that week it came to some meatcuting also.

Reminds my of the times I sat with my dad in observation huts in the evening, waiting for roe deer and red deer coming out of the woods. It was always great to see them walking and grazing below. Great to read how you teach your sons using knives.

getting your son out in the boonies is laying the foundation for a boy to become a man whom appreciates nature & will certainly help steer him away from the drug culture.

I really like reading your adventures, Bosse. Looking forward to the next one.

Great time Bosse. Nothing like getting out in the woods with your child and seeing him get interested in nature. sounds like you're going to loose a trapper soon!:D

Carl.

Good stuff and a good memory to keep. My daughter is in the "girly-girl" stage right now. Hope to get her into the woods soon.

Carl, I really hope so. I think that knifes, among others, is a great interest and hope to share it as much as possible with my sons. Even more I hope for them to be interested in hunting and fishing and outdoorslife. I have almost 50 folding knifes and are willing to share them equal if the interest is there. That special trapper though was gifted to me from a bladebrother and is a realy good outdoorsknife so that together with aproxomatly 5 other slipjoints and a lockback will not easyly leave my drawer until its the grandchildrens turn to wittle with me. But If that is the trapper they need I will pull all strings to get them simular ones.

Bosse, too bad he didn't notice the moose calf, but his focused fascination on the whittling brought back for me memories of being a kid, when almost every experience is new and wonderful.

Good story, thanks for posting.
