"Moose" pattern or "Trapper" Pattern?

Oh, trappers are awesome. And we should quit calling it a "spey" blade, and just use the original term: "castrator." Yeah, they're a little harder to sharpen, but I like them better than wharncliffes. More versatile. Better looking.

If Trappers were originally used for trapping, that might should be called a "skinner". If they're a mis-named ranch knife, then I like your idea. It definitely gets attention when casually dropped into conversation ...

Does a (full size) Moose have any advantages over a (full size) Trapper or the other way around?

Which do you prefer? A full size Moose or full size Trapper?

I'm not sure that I personally know of any advantages a Moose might have over a trapper .
I am sure though, that traditional pocket knives offer such a wide variety of selection , and it will always be personal preference towards one pattern over another ,for each individual. I know that's not really saying much but if you were stuck with one or the other in your pocket ,you could do just about any of the same tasks with either knife.

If you do not like spey blade variants in a two blade trapper ,besides a warncliffe they make those with a pen ,and Bose did one with a skinner. I had Dowell do one once with a spear.

I think if you look at knives ,you'll come to realize a moose may be a little more bulkier in your pocket than a trapper. But maybe not too, depends on the knife.
One thing I've noticed is the longer clip on like a slim type trapper ,seems to be a better feel for like peeling an apple. Fatter ,shorter knives just do not feel as good.

There's a lot of old timers out there that had slim trappers ,Moose ? well,I dunno.

Best bet just get one of each and this is what this pocket knife thing has certainly become ,vs. you have " your knife" ,meaning in the old days no one had a box full of different patterns and had difficulty picking out the knife they were gonna tote that day because they had so many to choose from. Haha

We're lucky

This Böker Germany carbon Copperhead has some nice jigging. Don't think Böker do a Trapper though....;)

Huh? Of course Böker makes trappers--very easy to find online.

Don't know but I like the name "trapper", and I love the blade shapes and sizes, and the handle, especially with jigged bone scales. It just "works" for me.

I'd bet on,you won't find as many different blade profile versions of Moose than you will a trapper

I never warmed up to Case's #54 pattern trapper, as it seems a little awkward handling. The 3⅞" traditional trapper makes a wonderful EDC, especially if you use your pocket knife for food prep. The long spey makes a good slicer and butter knife, while the clip works for "dirty" non-food related jobs. This old Bulldog works well and looks good doing it!

GEC's original #48 pattern is a winner as well.

Most moose patterns I see have taller blades from edge to spine whereas trappers as shorter. This is an advantage when skinning smaller fur bearers as trappers do.

Modern day, I just like the look of a trapper. I ended up modding mine to a single blade clip. With that yellow delrin, it is a great working blade.

Really...wonder why I've failed to notice them ;):D

If the OP had asked about SLIMLINE Trappers then you would see I'm not too much the Trapperphobe:D The CASE and Queen versions and not forgetting the GEC 48 single are impressive users:cool:

Admittedly, a bucket or pail may seem a better option than a trip to the outhouse in the middle of the night when it is 10 or 20 degrees (or more) below zero out, combined with a foot or more of (pardon my language) snow on the ground.
Hence the "chamber pot" lol, I didn't think I would like a trapper with a wharnecliffe blade, but now that a GEC Calfpen has become my edc I'm seriously thinking I have erred in my opinion.

IMG_1524.JPG I can't say about the moose pattern, because I don't have any, but I like me some trappers! Here are a few of mine. The one on the left, I bought new at K & K Hardware store in Bettendorf, Iowa in the early '80's. It has been used to clean a few critters, but always carefully cleaned afterwards. The yellow one on the right, although newer, has seen more hard use and has been used to field dress, skin and butcher a number of deer and smaller game. The two in the middle I bought with their character already in place and only wish I knew their stories!

BETTENDORF, IOWA?!?!
I recall that village!!!! When I was a young'un we drove through Bettendorf to visit my crazy Great Aunt, in Davenport, Iowa.
(She had 9 kids at home when she and her hubby divorced. Raising 9 pre-teen kids alone is what drived her crazy.)
I attended college for 3 quarters over at Scott Community College, in Bettendorf, too.
I (allegedly) "grew up" in Clinton, just to the north. :)

Ha! I grew up in Davenport and used to drive through Clinton on my way to hunt ducks out of Sabula, Iowa.
Sheesh, nine kids would make anybody crazy!!;)

Small world, I grew up just across the river from Dubuque. But I think I got the better deal since we have the Packers:D:D:D

Ever since I was "knee high to a gnat" I've been a Packers fan (and the Chicago Cubs) :)

Iowa.... isn't that just north of Amarillo somewhere? :D

Actually, I spent a couple of days in Montezuma about 10 or 15 years ago, looking for pheasant... wonderful people up there.

I like them both, but I have several Case Trappers and only one Moose. Once I got the Case Moose(6275), I realized I would probably just carry a trapper because if I was going to carry a Moose, I would be just as well to carry a Case Large Stockman(6375). It is the exact same frame as the moose, but it shortens the Spey and adds a sheepsfoot on the other end with the same number of springs, so it should be about the same size and weight as the moose.
