Mora Companion vs others in real use?

At the risk of starting a riot, which version of the Companion do you folks favor, carbon steel or stainless?

Stainless for the regular. I like the carbon H.D. also though. I was pleased when I realised that I could toss nice fero sparks with the squared off spine of a stainless. My wife has a couple of those soft grip deals in the cutlery drawer, which she uses frequently. I am not Mora focused now as I once was in the past, but I still appreciate them, a lot, for what they are. A Mora is always a welcome tool to have on an outdoor stroll.

For the current price of 10 bucks or less.. Pretty hard to compare to anything else in this price point. I love them. I usually have one in the car, great all around knife for misc tasks.

Frank, I can't tell the difference between the carbon and the 12C27. I find their 12C27 to be very similar to Buck's 420HC in use, if that helps.

I would pick based on desired blade thickness. They area available in 2.0mm, 2.5mm and 3.2mm.

I would steer clear of the Heavy Duty MG unless you're working hard with the knife all the time. The palm swell on the MG is really big and works nicely for me when really pushing hard but I found it utterly annoying in general use. I gave mine to a buddy who is a GC/carpenter and he loves it. I'm eyeing the (new?) Heavy Duty F which appears to have the 3.2mm carbon blade and the normal Companion handle. The 3.2mm blade is a better splitter but is not as versatile as the 2.5mm.

I know I sound like salesman, but I really think the normal Companion handle is one of the great wonders in the knife world. It simply disappears in the hand and it works perfectly in every hold.

Lastly and counter to the general love, I don't like the "pure" scandi grind and I just plan on spending time with a bench stone scrubbing my Moras down to a nice convex. YMMV.

I have both, and they both work very well. I used to only buy the carbon, but after finally trying the SS I find their cutting and sharpening performance almost equal with the SS having a slight edge over ease of maintenance.

I can leave the SS in the boat or the truck with little concern of the high humidity rusting the blade. Also, field dressing a deer with a carbon blade almost always result in red rust before I can get to a sink and scrub the blood and fat off the blade. With the SS versions I have no worries of rust.

I agree with this (well, the performance part anyway, as it fits my hand better than the base companion). My Companion HD is a continual disappointment at actual work. No matter how sharp I get it, the low scandi grind on the thicker blade just doesn't cut, carve or shave well. And it's too cheap a knife to be worth the effort to reprofile to a higher grind, rather than just using it as a special-purpose kindling knife around the firepit.

Oh that new bent model, i have a purple one in my box, though i prefer the scout model, fits my hand better

Have both, love both.

I tend to be less meticulous at blade care with my lesser expensive pieces, so I appreciate the stainless one more.
