Mora equivalent in a folder

So I lost my Benchmade 720 today at work :grumpy:

While I loved the knife, it gives me a chance to shift gears. Instead of buying a new Benchmade or other higher (or even higher yet) end folder, I thought I would investigate the utility end of the spectrum. I love my Mora's and I plan to swap to the Cold Steel Bushman as my fixed blade for field craft. So in keeping with this pattern of inexpensive yet VERY utilitarian blades, is there a locking folder out there that is stout, one handed opening, and maybe even made of carbon steel? I am not interested in serrations and I am not terribly concerned if the super tanto point can pierce an airplane fuselage...

Has anyone else traveled down this path? If so, does it dead end or is there light down there???

Thanks again.

Gary

I don't know about 1 hand opening but Opinel..comes to mind... a sodbuster pattern is also up there...

The believe that I have seen at least one Opinel modded to be a one hand opener.

This is a probably a little bit out of your price range, I believe Ragnar (the Mora guy) is chargeing $40 or $45 for them, but the Svord Peasant would fit your needs perfectly. It has a carbon steel blade, is very utilitarian looking, open's one handed (it has a protruding tang on blade- like a straight razor or Case Russlock) and is well made. They are made by Baker in New Zealand.

Spyderco native, like 25 bucks at walmart, Case sod buster 19.99 everywhere pretty much but doesnt lock, Victorinox one hand trekker 32.99ish, Victorinox soldier 20 bucks or so but doesnt lock...

None of those are carbon steel, but folders tend to get wet from time to time, Why would you want carbon steel? Just curious nothing wrong with that preference.

one more: Benchmade Pika 34.99, 440C but they're tough and made well. I carry mine at work most days, and I've done all sorts of bushcraft chores with it, and it's still like new.

He said he was looking into the bushman tommyhawk:jerkit: I would say a plain edge delica or endura would be the way to go. VG-10 steel (carbon will rust much faster) and many colors to choose from. If it costs $10.00 to $20.00 more than you planed to spend, it would be well worth it. Take care, BHDKnifer.

CRKT M-16 in Aluminum and AUS8
Solid, light worker. Quality.
(NOT the Zytel in AUS4!!!)

Or
CRKT E-Lock (black or bronze) folders for 25 on ebay, very good a little heavy but balanced well in the hand.

not many 1095 folders out there.

however, there's some really good folders for ~30$.

Spyderco Tenacious
Cold Steel Voyager series

are two that come to mind.

These are sweet little traditional knives, of an old pattern known as friction folders. This one happens to be an effective cutting tool, also. :) But Ragnar may be out of them right now. http://www.svord.com/pages/catalog/PK.htm

For a simple, inexpensive, modern folder, look at the Benchmade Monochrome.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. I'll spend the day looking around. These are great alternatives. I do appreciate them all.

BHDKnifer, I was not looking for a Bushman Tommyhawk I don't think. At least I cannot find where I wrote that. I do have a Vector modified hawk that uses a coldsteel trailhawk head though...

He said he was looking into the bushman tommyhawk
Bushman fixed blade. Different from the Pocket Bushman (although I think the Pocket Bushman is a little massive for EDC, and its supposed to be hard to open one-handed.
I'd look at the Byrd from Spyderco and the Spyderco Tenacious and Spyderco Native. Also, various Kershaw knives come to mind, some Bucks, CRKT, Gerbers, Cold Steel, and Benchmade's Red Box series.
Whoever posted the Moore Maker- I've heard they are of quality, and I'm going to kill you, because you're going to make me spend $37.

The Byrds are a good bet. Most else below about $40 and I would not be real happy with the steel. At $40 the Native is a good value. For about fifty-something you can probably get a Griptilian, or a few dollars more, an Endura or Delica. The Griptilian would be my choice.

None of those is as inexpensive as a Mora, but in my estimation are similar since they are about the cheapest, no frills options that will still give really solid performance you can trust.

I remember years ago when I lost a good blade and didn't feel like spending a fortune to replace it. I ended up buying like 3 cheaper blades before giving up and just dropping 150 to get a good knife. Would have been cheaper to go benchmade right off the bat.

that said, I wouldn't go any cheaper than the cheap walmart sydi or a red class BM.

The Case Sodbuster in carbon steel would be my choice. The snap is very strong and you would really have to work at it to get it to close unexpectedly.

If you can find one this is an Awsome knife - ColdSteel Prolite

I use this knife all the time, I love it  It is very tough, has one of the thickest line locks I've ever seen, the knife is bigger&than the RAT3

Eka folders might fill the bill.
I have two of their slipjoints, great little knives!
They have lockblades as well.
Check them out at Ragweed Forge.

Other than that i would say get an Opinel or a Douk-Douk.
