Mora Pass Around problem

Hey guys.

Both Moras showed up at my house again. Apparently the last person who had them could not find the thread to figure out who they went to so he sent them back to me:rolleyes:

I know that we want to keep "Sticky" threads to a minimum around here but with Bladeforms being so damn stingy about allowing people to use the "search" function to find these threads I think the least that can be done is to stick the pass around threads so people can figure out where the hell they are:confused:

Can somebody with "search" find the mora thread and kick it up so we can get this thing going??

Amen brother!!! So what's the big deal about letting people use the search on this forum anyway?! This is the ONLY forum I have ever been to that restricts the use of the search function. In fact, this is the first forum I have been to that restricts anything from non-paying members. Is it just that they don't want to sell advertisements or something?

Anyways, AT THE VERY LEAST THEY SHOULD MAKE A STICKY ABOUT HOW TO SEARCH THE FORUM USING GOOGLE.

Then they wouldn't have to sticky every passaround, and they don't have to let us use the search.

P.S. the next person after udtjim is Tohatchi NM.

another handy tip for anyone involved in passarounds-
either subscribe to the thread (i don't remember if non-paying members can do this)
or copy and paste the URL into a word document so that you always know where to find it. better yet, C&P any relevant info like addresses and list of people in order. no worries if the world ends then, the passaround will still go on!

It's a good thing, 'cause man, I was about to come over there... J/K

Seriously though, what about making a sticky that is a tutorial on how to use google to search bladeforums?

Too many stickies gets messy, guys. It's a function of Google - you can search that way on any site via Google. Maybe Spark will make it an announcement thrad. I'll ask him.

I really appreciate the lack of slowing down ads on BF. I have to say at least probably 20%(or more) of the busyness of this wilderness forum versus KF's is that KF's is SO slow due to the ads. I used to love KF's Hiking and Camping and OSF, and still do, but it's so SLOW.

On the other hand though I really think restricting the search function to paying members is raw. I mean a lot of times somebody comes on here and asks a question I KNOW there's a thread on but there's no way to kick it up for them:mad:

With the recent upgrade we have the little subgroups, and adding friends, and messaging which is all cool, but I'd trade them all to be able to use the search function;)

I agree 100% Their is alot of great threads over there, its just so slow.....Thats another one of things that makes this site great.

Guys, the search function for non-pay members is down because of server issues, nothing more. Spark would have to invest another $10k or more to get it up to speed. That's a lot of cashola. One way for him to get money to do this is if folks cough up $10 or $20 for the year to get paid membership, which is less than a tank of gas. But doing that means you have access to search functions anyway. Remember all the "server busy" messages that kept you from logging on? That was mostly when search was opened back up to non-paid members.

If you're not happy with it, please understand it's not purposefully done to deprive you of benefits here, it's just the way the situation has unfolded for now. It wouldn't kill you to cough up $10/year for a basic membership would it?

Edited to add: the anger of some registered members about this demonstrates to me they don't understand the realities of keeping this show running and the enormous undertaking in time and money that goes into it. Spark works his ass off to keep everything afloat. The knife business is not one of the most lucrative out there, believe it or not. Maintaining a full time knife shop is exhausting enough and is high overhead/low margin, and a great deal of Spark's time and revenue rolls over into keeping this place alive and kicking. Membership dues help, but most of it comes out of his pocket. Spark just finally took his first vacation since he took over Bladeforums in 1998. That's 10 years of 24/7 hard work from him to keep us chatting here, and even then, all he did was take a local canoe trip for a few days. I hope that helps explain things and alleviates some of the unfounded anger from certain members here. So, with all due respect to a great member here, who's really the stingy one? The owner of Bladeforums or the guy who has spent $1000s on knives over the years yet can't even part with a basic $10 membership fee for a place he spends a great deal of time and says he gets great benefit from? I'm not pressuring anyone into getting a paid membership, but please don't bitch and moan if you choose not to, and don't get everything handed to you that you want. We make every effort to accomodate everyone to the best of our ability, but in some areas, we are stretched thin and have to make compromises for the greater benefit.

For sure. Back in March I kinda incriminated myself and others in a similar position by posting the below in service and support.

“The server seems to have taken a hammering since the search feature for us non-paying members was enabled again. It has been peachy for the last 24hrs but the 48hrs preceding that was patchy. Still, mah gets get got soon enough. I have 5mins of go do something else at worst.”

If one was looking just looking for an excuse to dump the search feature for us freebies there was one right there. I was not alone in reporting that. Yet far from it, Spark replied:

“People are reporting that they got just as many server too busy errors while search was disabled, so I'm not all that sure what's up. Past plonking down for another server, which isn't in the cards right now, just ride it out...”

Excellent. He clearly made efforts with the tools at his disposal to avoid excluding folk. Little things like that are more informative than the big obvious things.

I have Bladeforums automatically subscribe me to any threads in which I post. Since I'm set up to start up on my User CP, there they are. Alternatively, it's easy to bookmark threads of interest to your browser's favorites.

I've been doing that on the threads I start or these passaround things myself:thumbup:

I used to run something like a forum in a previous life for around 50K (not concurrent) users. A big part of the server issues for us were also from searches, since we had a LOT of technical documentation out there for people, and the documents' text was searchable. That was the whole point of the system though, and it was one of the largest companies in the world, so paying for servers wasn't a big deal.

We would tweak the available search options to see what they would do, and the biggest performance gain came from just letting people search the title of documents, topics, articles, etc. I am wondering if vbulletin has that option, since I know that whenever I do a search on something and forget to check the "search titles only" option, most of the threads are unrelated to my search.

And, it looks like my Gold membership has expired, so I look like one of the bad guys again. :)

I need to go dig up my credit card info...

I am the guilty party, and you are right, I couldn't find the thread. My old brain does not function as well around these new fangled computers as id did when we send smoke signals!!!:D
