I own a Frosts Mora #840 MG that I picked up from Sportsmans guide:

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=78455

I really like it - after learning to sharpen it - I get why yall suggested it.

Now then - I would like to get one with a nice sheath (although I can have that made) and Full Tang.

Any suggestions that is about like the 840 yet has a full tang and a Scandi grind,

TF

What features do you want besides a full tang? Scandi grind? Dan Koster's bushcraft is the first one that springs to mind, but there are a lot of others that are in a similar pattern. Bark River has a good variety, and folks seem to like them.

None of your other options are going to come in at ten bucks like the Mora, though.

There are a few Moras that have stick tangs. The wooden handled models, and the plastic handled 500 series. There are some full tang blades available from Frosts that have a different shape than most Moras. You'll have to roll your own handles and sheath. Don't know if they're offered as ready made knives anywhere.

Muskrat Man Knives-Full Tang Puuko, makes a mean scandi. Less wait time.

Koyote Knives-Ultralight, makes a nice scandi.

Koyote Bushcrafters with a scandi or convex edge.

i just bought one of the full tang blades from ragnar and added some oak handles you can use whatever you would like as far as handle material is concerned, so it gets to be a personal knife. i used the kbl 115 blade pictured in the above link to frosts blades.

I think I was making the assumption that all Mora's had Scandi grinds.

I fixed my original post - I want a Scandi grind to make field sharpening easier.

It's hard to beat Frost's price, but if you go custom you can be a bit more picky on tip, edge style and belly, and size of the tang. And it should be fairly inexpensive assuming you don't need anything super fancy done with the scales or filework or something. Quite a few makers in here could do it quickly and well, I think.

I am also realizing a mistake in my original post. I want a full length tang - it does not have to be a full width tang.

I am thinking of picking up - or having someone make a blade handle for me out of one of these:

The fourth one down would do nicely.

I wonder if anyone on this board would do this for me for a reasonable price? Make a nice wooden handle and set this blade in with a small guard.

Any suggestions?

The plain old #1 is pretty close to what you're describing:

http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

It's the first one at the top of the page. The stick tang does extend to the back of the handle. If you scroll down, there's a few models with guards as well.

I'm partial to the S-1; it's the same pattern but with a laminated carbon steel blade.

Dutch,

Why is the Laminated superior in your opinion. It says on the website it bends easier - wouldn't that be a bad thing in a survival situation? Thanks for your patience - I am learning.

Cool.

Wasn't there a picture of someone on these boards who X-Ray'd a bunch of Mora's to see how long the tang went into the handle?

FYI - I'm also partial to having a spare knife or two as insurance. Moras are cheap and light, so I bring a spare. It's much faster than sharpening, too.

I guess I like the fact that they are not full tang. That is, it contributes to their very light weight which is a feature I love in the Mora. A mere few Oz but excellent cutting tools. I have been using the SS Clipper and the Original No. 1 for quite a few years for all my hunting and camping chores. Never a problem with the short tang yet.

I like moras, I always have. Good for woodwork and utility.
Don't baton with them. 711 has a great tang but some batoning on soft pine pr-packaged firewood made the blade come out.
