"The keystroke is mightier than the sword"

Since I have a few Morans, I had to do this project I was thinking about. A friend of mine worked out access to this sand/bead blaster in this guy's shop, and we went there over the weekend to do just that! I taped up the handle on my "project Moran", put it in the blast tank, and I blasted that beautiful mirror-polished finish away! I now have a bead-blasted, gray blade Moran! I must say, it looks very good like that, I wish that the knife was offered in a black-t finish, too. I did this project to have a Moran as a true utility version, and one that I can use in my Edgeworks tactical sheath without having to worry about the pretty finish. Sure, I'll have to use oil more often now, but I really like this "utilitarian" Moran project. If any of you have access to a blasting tank, go for it! I did some clips/screws, which also turned out great. The clip and screw set from my Military now has that nice dull-gray finish to cut down on the "glare and stare" factor. I wish that I had a blaster, as I'd try anything at least once! Here Kitty...just kidding. Hehe.

Savman, beware. There are different schools of thought as to the level of corrosion resistance after blasting. Did you apply with sand or glass bead? I' ve been told by some well known makers that glass bead is preferable over sand if one chooses to blast.

PS- those same car rental guys are advertising another Terzuola!

Nakano,
I used sand on my Moran, since that's what my friend had loaded into his machine. I'll have to test it some more to see if it'll hold up for corrosion resistance. If it were to get too ugly, I could just stick it back in the tank and blast it again! I NEED to have one of those blasting tanks! Since I have a few Morans, I don't mind messing with one as a project, even if it were to take a turn for the worse. If you know of any finishing methods for blasted metal, let me know. I'm open for suggestions as to what to use on this blade, since this type of finishing is new to me. Maybe some type of lacquer or something?

So, you say the car rental dudes are back on the Terz scene again? Man, I've got four of those guys now! One more couldn't hurt I guess...hehe.

See 'ya,
Chad

I recently purchased the Moran also. In fact, my wife likes it so much that I had to purchase another one for her to use in the kitchen!

This is a GREAT knife! Too bad that Spyderco is discontinuing its production.

Daniel

Daniel - not discontinued, just changed grind to flat, and finish to satin.

Chad - I don't think that you will have a problem with rusting of the VG10. It proved to be one of the better corrosion resistant steels.
sal

It should be OK "as is" Sal? I just wanted to do this project to one of my Morans "just to see". I'm happy about how it turned out, and it mates good with my Edgeworks' Moran tactical sheath. I was wondering whether or not I should do something to the blasted finish.

OK, I have heard the masses and followed the crowd. I ordered a Featherweight today and should get it tomorrow. I also ordered a 204 model sharpmaker, G10 police (flat ground, plain edge--YES!!) and a LadybugII! I'm a bad boy. I'll let you all know if the Featherweight is everything I've heard it is. I'm sure that it is though. I had to order one while they still have the rolled edge on them.

"The keystroke is mightier than the sword"

This is definitely one knife I'm dying to have. Is it still discontinued? I'm buying one as soon as I can afford to eat again.

I'd love to see this knife evolve toward either a drop-point blade or a spearpoint blade shape. Hey, but that'd make me just another 'wisher' among the hundreds already here! LOL

Pant, pant, pant...I am in love with the FB01! This is without a doubt the sharpest out of the box factory knife I have ever seen (or felt)! My left arm is quite bare from one pass of the blade. I haven't had a chance to really use it yet, but I've cut a little paper, cardboard, and stuff around the house. Perfect backpacking fixed blade. The mirror polish is just that-I can see myself well enough to shave if I wanted to. I'm less than enamored with the sheath though it is decent. I would like to have a Scandinavian style hanging sheath made of either leather or maybe concealex.

The one thing that I wonder about is how the krayton inserts will hold up over time. For the price though, I don't mind finding out for myself.

Paul,

Dexter also has a similar thread in the knife reviews area. There are several posts there about conceal-x or kydex sheaths. You might want to check it out!
