Bin Laden, vows world wide attacks on americans and jewish people if america attcks afgani or himself. We know that there are plenty of sleeper cells in the u.s. short of rounding up all arab americans. What should the government do ? What you as an American do to keep yourself and your family out of harms way now that it seems that there no way to turn back of the hands of time. I would think that we should expect more massive attacks hitting home very hard.

I for one have always advocated building a berlin style wall along the mexican american border to prevent illegal aliens and slow down the drug movement into the u.s. Anyone think this is a good idea?
 
Sounds like a reasonable idea to me. To my way of thinking, one problem with the influx of immigrants from third world countries that few people consider, is that generaly speaking, those who come here are the smartest and most ambitious people the nations they come from have to offer. On the face of it, this may seem like a good thing. In the long run however, it's not, because this brain drain all but guarantees that the counties they left will never rise above third world status.
 
Right after the wall is built, do we then issue the National ID cards? Bad, bad idea, and totally non american, if we build walls they win! Think of Berlin..........
 
I would propose giving the new cabinet level position of homeland security even broader powers. First of all any person not pledging allegience to our union should be immediatly imprisioned in special reeducation camps. Also anyone who arises suspicion should be monitered for subversive activity by having a tattoo branded on thier arm and a yellow star on all of thier clothing. THis combined with Walls on the mexican border should make this country rise to even a greater status than pre war Germany.

Get the sarcasm??? Isolationist policy will not work its a small world and our freedoms are worth fighting for.

Some time back, I knew a couple of border guards. My uncle is ex Texas Ranger and he and his buddies along with a few border guards sometimes got together for barbecues. They would talk about what it would be to build a wall, but there was no doubt that it was all in fun.
I mentioned this post to him on the phone last night and he got a bit angry [for an old codger he has still got some steam], "That's not the American way" he grumbled. So there it is, it is not Americas way

Before we jump too hard down HLS's throat, I think it is a good discussion beginning here. Some simply said "no," and one said "stupid". I would ask why, but I think that Rob S and Rad have hit the button there.

It's a toug hsituation we are all going through here, but these discussions are good opportunity for leearning and sharing -- let's try to do it without insulting each other though, ok?

First off Why do we have border guards there uh.... guys its not to welcome these people into the country :P. Border guard and helicopters and infa red camera are basically a make shift human wall!
True the American way would say send us your poor, your hungery your tired etc..... We don't allow just anyone to come to our country we have limits and quotas here people. Unless you change the law that says once your in american soil that makes you an American I don't see a problem with a wall. Lets look at a bigger picture long term picture. When there only so many resources to go around, and too many people what do you have? You will have people fighting for whats left. Any state that borders the mexico borders will have a couple of things in common, a huge drain on their resources. Education and social services get hit hard. While in California commerence was boombing, a state like new mexico suffered greatly because of the influx from people from mexico draining the resources beyond belief while not giving back enough.

Stats show a few things.

Mexican have the lowest income bracet. Low income bracket means low taxes low taxes means less programs for people.

Highest high school drop out of any racial group

Least likely to overcome poverty.

What makes you think that a wall along our southern border would stop anyone as long as our government does not care about illegal immigration? They obviously do not care or they would be doing something about it.

Along with the NAFTA mindset has come a relaxing of our national identity in all areas. We are no longer the US of A.... we are just the A's.

Because of the creeping socialism of our nation and states, the illegal immigration is an issue. If there weren't improper and often unconstitutional social programs that immigrants are perceived as disproportionately benefitting from, immigration wouldn't be an issue.

I submit, therefore, that illegal immigration is not the issue as much as it is a symptom of a bigger problem within the governmental culture of the US of perceived entitlements to a government teat.

Phil, I think that I have to agree with you.

Mexico has always been a poor nation but we did not have the problem of illegal immigration 30 or 40 years ago. Then LBJ began the Great Society in the 60's and it's all been down hill from there.
 
There are already fences that have been set up in parts of the border as is. My solution would be to grow cactus along the border. thick dense cactus where ever possible. You wouldn't have to guard as much. Because I don't think anyone going to spend days cutting through miles and miles of cactus. This was how they kept cattle from wandering off in AU. Followed by a 22 feet tall and 5ft deep.
I probably put motion dectors in to ensure no digging was going on. I think your point of the great wall falling doesn't apply here because there a difference between a war and people just trying to sneak into ones country. I also hear that president fox of mexico is setting up aid station, where the people trying to cross the border can find help and water. He might as well build a 5 star rail road for them to come over.
 
My tone may have made me sound like I dislike mexican or other people of color. My parents came to the u.s. from another country, so I have no problem with anyone coming to the u.s. however there a different by legal means and what they do. I'm sure that this post has gotten some people worked up, but ask yourself what happens when there 55 students per class room, what happens when social services dries up, what happens the tax dollars don't come pouring in anymore because the average wage earner makes such a low wage? I think in the next decade or so we will see texas fall the same way new mexico went down south because of the people from mexico sucking it dry.

As far as pictures...don't think this is a good idea. Bush's idea is that we will not hear about those who have gone down. Which means that other terrorists will have to wonder also. Sort of terrorism in reverse, emphisis on fear.
I remember that in some cases during the Viet conflict, bodies were left laying around as an object lesson, especially by the Gurhkas, while at other times the bodies were made to just dissapear. Very spooky and make for many sleeples nights in the enemy camp.
No, if possible I would like to see the ones identified run through a meat grinder or acid bath [preferably alive] so that no trace remains.
Other terrorist will not know if thier friends have deserted and are spilling all, or have run away, in which case they will be psychologicaly spooked either way.
I guess this thread is beggining to shift a little:)
