More Bandsaw (and blade) choice questions (and reasons why)

Really, really cool video. thanks.

I picked up a 4tpi x 1/2" blade (lowest tooth count they had). thickest stock will typically be 2" ... maybe borderline, but will see how it goes.

Thank you for posting the link to that video!

But this only works for straight cuts, right? So not useful for gross stock removal around a profile before going to the grinder?

Actually I use it in the upright position and scroll a pattern just like a portaband on a stand will do. I sit on the vice with a Uhaul blanket like a saddle.

Find an old saddle and put it over the vise part of the bandsaw. Make a wooden T that clamps in the vise and the saddle will sit right on it. You can glue the saddle in place from underneath. Old saddles are really cheap if they are not rideable any longer. Some places may even give you one ... especially an English saddle.

Other ways to make your horz/vert saw look cool and allow you to sit is put an old motorcycle seat on it. Again, a trip to a cycle shop may get you one for free when you tell them why you want it.

Ok ... the only way i am going to buy this if you show photos. Give.
(And if you do it successfully, i will buy each of you a gift card for dinner out at a restaurant local to you)

It's not mine, it belongs to knifemaker Greg Haile, but do I still win the free dinner?! :D ;)

Omg ... that was worth it just for tbe photo. Send me a private message and we will arrange something.

WHAT caused him to build that thing???

haha It's all good, I was just kidding around. I'm also not a paying member so I'm not able to send pm's, but it's no problem.

It does look like a great idea to be able to use it as a standard upright band saw and without getting a backache. Since I don't have enough shop space I've been waiting to get a decent (Dewalt) portaband with a swag table, but if I had the space I'd probably have something similar with a horizonal Harbor Freight saw since I've believe I remember hearing they work decently, or at least used to, which would be quite a bit less expensive.

I would say that most folks who use their 4X7 bandsaw in the vertical position put a foam pad, pillow, seat, or something over the bed so they can sit comfortably. Many remove the vise jaws so it is just a flat metal bed ( just remove the three bolts that show in the photo). You sit straddle the bed and saw away. I would lay my steel bars and blade cutouts on the bed in front of me. I don't know if I have a photo of mine with the saddle on it, but I'll look around. It was a used English saddle for a small horse/pony.

Since then, I pulled the hinge pin out, took the whole saw head off the base and bolted the bandsaw on the end of the workbench. This cleared more floor space.

My, my... i never would have imagined using that tool that way (did not even know the head could be rotated to vertical). I was positive you two were pulling my leg! I’ll eat crow - so my offer of a dinner gift card stands. PM me if you want to arrange (or let me know through the thread). Still, im not sure if that is an image i want to keep in my head ... sort of like something out of Dr. Strangelove!

Thanks for the offer, but take another knifemaker who is near you to dinner and chat about knives.

Pretty much all horizontal bandsaws have a vertical position and a table you screw in place for use as a standing bandsaw. In actuality, few knifemakers ever use it in the horizontal position ... which is why I got rid of the base and vice altogether.
