More Blade Pix!!

WOW, is that Fakeducci pushing the garbage can full of INFI at the far right side of this pic???

No Bro, That IS the JANITOR.

Now you see why I was dizzy after a day at the trough! A certain SY Hound is howling with joy today after scoring that CS ASH-1 mod on the far right in the last knife display photo. I got tickled when I saw him cutting up dinner WITH A PLASTIC KNIFE while he had that big beauty dangling off his hip!!!

Big thanks for the pics. I might have copied them for future reference. There was one knife that looked like an ash handle bastardized with a pointy SS blade. MMMH, that one caught my eye. (the one on the far right in this picture)

But I think the ones really making me sad I am not there are the competition finish blades (SAR especially, then the Jackhammer, then the HR) They just want to be used hard. No need to worry about scratches.

Does anyone have an Infilore about why there are these dimples in the blanks? What is it about the process that leaves these? I really love them.

The famous INFI dimples are apparently a by-product of the heat-treat process that the blades receive. The final grind removes them from the primary bevels, but they are left on the flats in the Combat Grade (coated) models. Satin and DCBB knives need more finish work, and thus cost more.

Jerry first teased us about this Competition Grade in this thread.

I don't think it's the heat treat, that would oxidize the surface and Infi has a hard time growing more than a little surface rust, pits that deep probably wouldn't happen even with the elevated temps.

The thing I heard which makes sense to me is that raw Infi is formed in to bars by hot rolling which leaves a rough finish on the surface. Most angle iron is made by hot rolling, if you go to a hardware store you can see what I mean. For contrast, I have worked with a lot of cold rolled mild steel. It's surface finish is much better but it is more expensive.

For a knife that is made to be coated, dimples don't matter and they might even make the coating stick better.

Thinking about this makes me wonder, how does Busse remove the heat treating scale that must form? They certainly are not sanding it off.

Thanks for posting pics Phil, and it was good to see you again this year:thumbup:
