More Dangerous...Sharp Knives or Heat Treat Foil??

Hello,

when i was making Artsy type blades that
Required low after treat ooxide scale formations we devised a Retort chamber that
fitted inside our Paragon oven, the lid was fitted with hooks to hang the blades and we then filled the chamber with Argon gas prior to heat treat, if the blades went in Mirror polished thats the way they cam out.

One word of caution though, Make sure the argon gas tank is sealed and turned off completely or it will bleed out and since it is heavier than air will float alnog the bottom of your work environment as it bleeds out . this is a bad thing as it will displace any air as it does so and well you can figure out the rest,, 8)

If you people use eletrical or gas ovens this should work.
Insted of ceramic wool for isolation, get some carbon wool or something (probably the same as Koawool but filled with pure carbon dust). Make a big cylinder of it , and heat the whole thing. When hot, just stick you knife in, like you would puncture something.
When hot, get it out fast and just quench.
If you are fast enough, decarb should be minimal.

Another option is to heat the blade in molten salt to red-hot, and quench. The salt layer on it prefers decarb too.

Just what I saw and read....maybe good ideas?
