If I would have loved him less, or cared less for my neighbors, I could have abandoned him somewhere. It might have been easier on my conscience, but somehow I don't think so.
I think you're right Howard. I've never had to do it, but I had to know where I stood had our dog turned on one of the kids. I decided that I'd do it myself for the same reasons.
My folks live on an island and had to put a few dogs down--its a ride to the boat, a 15 min trip on the boat, then 25 min to the vet, during all of which the dog knows something awful is going down. I saw the face of one who took that long ride and I can tell you it would have been much more humane had my dad walked him for 5 minutes to some woods and shot him. and my dad paid dearly for those long rides, and the wait in the vet's office for the injection. Not to mention leaving the body behind--noone to bury
