South Australia moves to tackle knife crime after Bondi, Westfield chaos

SA Attorney-General Kyam Maher announced the potential reforms on Sunday, saying the government would consider expanding police metal detector search powers on public transport, increasing the age for the purchase knives from 16 to 18 years and introducing a registration scheme for certain categories of knives.

Tough new laws on knife crime are in place in Queensland under the name “Jack’s Law”.

The legislation, passed in March 2023, gives the police greater search powers to find and confiscate dangerous weapons, allowing cops to “wand”, or move a detector over a person, at designated zones such as public transport hubs.

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley has said her government is considering similar measures.

That sucks... the Oz version of an assault weapons ban after an incident. It's always easier to go after the tool instead of the root cause .

100%. Like the kids in London, England – they have a huge youth knife crime problem (and a Muslim machete and general violence problem) in a country here it's almost impossible to buy a knife or the ones you can get are benign non-locking things. Yet the idiots who wish to stab will take steak knives or chefs knives to their victims. The laws and the knives are irellevent. It's the breakdown of family, absent fathers, violent youth culture, mass immigration from violent problematic societies. Woe to Europe.
