Here was my first attempt at a fire: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=583232

Since my first fire, I've experimented a little more and I've learned how crucial it is to take smaller steps. Before after I got a small fire, I'd throw in the big pieces of wood right away. I was more patient today thanks to some snacks.

I tried out the cotton ball and vaseline last night and it was great, however tonight I wanted to try without it.

This time I used my favorite knife. The res-c handle was really comfortable and the choil helped with the smaller tasks. Ban helped me reprofile the edge by taking down the shoulder and thinning the angle, it cuts a lot better!

I found an old piece of wood in the backyard to make shavings and curls.

After that, I gathered some bigger pieces.

The striker that comes with the firesteel is pretty much useless so I used my Gossman PSK (also reprofiled).

2-3 strikes later!

Nice! Looks like you had a good time.

I've been telling myself over and over that I need to practice my fire making skills more. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Good idea with the little BBQ for your fire practice! Also, that re-profiled DM looks great!

thats what I was about to say. the DM is wow, and im also a sucker for the PSK, I got junior and senior both with stag handle.

That yard bbq is giving me ideas too ;)

Cheetos, beer, fire - you obviously are an enlightened man. I'm pretty sure I could re-create that scene with ease.

Yep, the Light My Fire Ferro Rods have a funky striker and if you use the other side that has a sort of rolled over effect from the stamping process, it will throw sparks like nobody's bidness. :)

Try the striker on the other side.......quite a difference!

Make sure the side that says "UP" is up too. :) The one side is rounded and the other is squared.

You can use the jagged end, or the flat section below the flame logo too depending on preference.

Looks like you all beat me to it, I used to think my striker was useless as well, good thing I looked close at it before I tossed it out. Throws a smaller amount of fatter sparks that burn longer.
Also, you could probably take a little more off the shoulder there, I bet you will see even better performance. Essentially you will be convexing the edge by doing that.
Before I had my dads belt sander i would use a file and go very slowly, watch your fingers!

Nice fire man!

Blade looks nice as well. Way to keep after it.

BTW, I love seeing pics on this site. Makes the post more fun :D

we all know and love your fires...:D

I was recommended to arrange the tepee/hut first and then put the small fire in the center. I'll try that next time.

Thanks for the striker tip, I gotta give that a try. I still need to make the hacksaw striker.
