More Fun? Pistol or Lever-Gun?

I'm going to be buying another gun coming up (I have a rifle (7mm-08), shotgun, .22 mag, and some other long guns) and can't decide between a few of them. I really want a CZ SP-01 or a Marlin .44 mag lever action. I have a deer rifle, shotgun for home defense, so this gun will be for the range (I'd bring the Marlin on deer drives). They are both different guns that will be a new thing for me to master. Which would you get, and why?

I would go with the pistol. It doesnt sound like you have anything comparable in your collection. There are a lot of fun drills you can do with a pistol and there might be a club near your home where you could get involved in IDPA or something. I really enjoy my Kimber .45.

I've been leaning towards the pistol, but price is somewhat of a concern. I can get the CZ for $600, or a nice marlin for $350. I reload, so ammo is not a problem. I won't do IDPA or anything like that, I don't like that kind of thing, shooting is very personal to me for some reason. I really like to go and shoot little groups with my 7mm, this is something I can see me doing with either of these guns as well.

Sounds like your collection needs a pistol! I have an SP-01, and it is one of the best pistols I have owned. I have a 1911, S&W revolvers, an XD .45, and I have had Glocks and Sigs. The SP-01 is the most fun to shoot pistol of the lot. Very accurate and reliable, and it has a lot of weight towards the muzzle, so follow up shots are fast. I highly reccommend it or any of the CZ handguns.

The CZ is a nice gun but make sure you handle one before purchasing. I almost bought one back in the day but then i got to try one. Its a good shooter but it was just too big for my medium to small hands. Actually it was mostly a problem with the double action trigger, way too far of a reach for me. I can shoot Sigs and Beretta 92f's fine but the CZ was just too much of a finger stretcher.

I'm certainly no gun expert but I would advise getting the pistol - just because you seem to already have a lot of long guns. It seems to me that having the pistol would open up opportunities for learning new skills and having some fun doing it.

I think I'm heading for the pistol. I've narrowed my pistol options down to the CZ SP-01, CZ P-01 (compact SP-01), and a Sig P229. I now just have to find a gun shop with all three so I can compare side by side.

If you've got access to open shooting country, go for the Marlin. I've got one and really like it but I live in Los Angeles so my pistols get more action than my long guns. What good is a rifle at 25 yards anyway?

I'd get the pistol. I'm actually looking at getting a P01. Long guns are fun, but I have a lot less opportunies to shoot them as I am a city dweller.

$600 for the SP01 is too much. You should be able to find them online for about $475 or so. Even after transfer fees and such, you're still looking at $550. Whoever you're thinking of buying from, you should talk them down in price. PM me for a couple of sites.

I have that same Marlin, it's is a great shooter and you can always load it with 44 specials, its a great 1st choice for a lever gun.

Why don't you like CZs? Did you have a bad experience with them, if so I'd like to know what happened.

It's strange that you're recommending an American made firearm when your screen name implies that you have no problem using an imported weapon.

If you want a cheaper and better CZ get a EAA witness they are cheaper and you can get them in 10mm :D. Here is a link to there site. I love my 10mm witness

My 10mm looks like but it is the wonder finish. They have many different different styles if you don't like this. I think I paid $450.00 nib for mine.

Here ya go michaelmcgo http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/21_82 eighth gun down $473.71, and these guys are great to deal with. I have bought 8 1911s, 2 S&W M&Ps, 2 870 Police Magnums, 2 Marlin Guide Guns and 2 Ruger SP101s from them all in the last 12 months. You couldn't ask for better people to deal with, and they are honest as the day is long. They also stock used guns.

If I have broken a rule by posting this link..Mods please remove it and forgive me.

CZs are awesome-- one of the best values out there. My 97B rivals my kimber gold match in accuracy-- in ergonomics, it beats it. My friend's P01 (the compact, nato spec one) is amazingly accurate for its size and has never misfired in all this time he's had it. And we've shot it until it has been caked with gunk. They frames are pretty big as commetned above, which is why I like my 97B as I have large hands, but it is worth going and holding one.
I've fired the SP01 Shadow model and I *loved* it. But they are not Cali legal. And yes, I live in an unbelievably annoying state for gun nuts.

Marlin levers are damn fun as well... get both.

Everybody needs a pistol. The Marlin is a nice weapon as well, but save that for being a future purchase!

Every time I look over a CZ---I can't get over how cheap and crudely made they are----much like Savage rifles:barf:. They're just awfull.

I've been using this screen name for years----I don't even own a Glock anymore---I do own a Sig and a H&K----but the majority of my pistols are S&W's and Ruger's.

Marlin makes a damn fine rifle---out of the choices of the 2 given---I'd take the Marlin any day---every day.

In a world being flooded with cheap Chinese garbage---I'm trying to buy American when at all possible---we need to support our own manufacturing and shun all the cheap junk coming in.

In most of the gadget discussions on this board---I pretty much stick to Bark River---Buck---and Benchmade knives---I have a Spyerco Native but have pretty much written off the Delica and Endura because they're not US made.

I only buy Mag and Surefire flashlights.

Too bad you can't find a US made watch.

Even my wallet is US made---from Fox Creek Leather----they also made my motorcycle jacket.

Interesting. Fit and finish on my 97B are excellent. As for Savage, they aren't lookers but they certainly are shooters.

Omaha, you're the first person I know who's described CZ firearms as cheap junk. Inexpensive certainly, but the general consensus seems to be that CZ guns are a tremendous value. True, their pistols may not be as finely finished as a Sig or HK, but then again, you're not paying Sig and HK prices.

I like to buy American also. My only two firearms are American made. But I like having choices. I think that competition keeps American companies on their toes and we as consumers benefit from it.

Agreed. Someone had better tell Angus Hobdell he is shooting junk ;)
I'd put up a CZPO1 Shadow against any semi-custom offering from Sig or HK in a head to head test... and I'd run my 97B against any .45 from HK or Sig.
