Luddites and gear phobia types need not read this:
I originally made this for arborist work, for when i'm on rope (3/4" Arborplex) up in the trees. The idea behind the grapple is you throw it to the next tree, pull yourself over with with it, while still being roped in. Once at the second tree, you take your flipline, loop it around the tree trunk, and then pull in you rope from the first tree and start all over again with your tree thinning. saves climbing up and down all day, which is very fatiguing. It is NOT a LIVELOAD device, merely a way to pull ones self sideways.
It is made from a Black diamond Talon (big wall rock gear), a eyering bolt, and several nylock nuts and loctite. I'm in the middle of machining a solid steel shaft for it, rather than using an eye bolt.
Its also very useful in the woods or on the canoe. Use it from a canoe, wing it towards shore and catch the ground or shrubs or trees, and pull yourself in. Use it to catch a runaway canoe on a river. Use it in the woods for pulling down dangerous widowmaker branches in your camp. (a very good WS&S skill to have) etc etc etc
it is NOT a live load device, nor is it meant for rock climbing or rappelling (in this configuration). Merely a tool for snagging stuff. I made one for a military buddy, he uses it for snagging triplines and safely activating such hazards.
