More GEAR: mini grapple

Luddites and gear phobia types need not read this:

I originally made this for arborist work, for when i'm on rope (3/4" Arborplex) up in the trees. The idea behind the grapple is you throw it to the next tree, pull yourself over with with it, while still being roped in. Once at the second tree, you take your flipline, loop it around the tree trunk, and then pull in you rope from the first tree and start all over again with your tree thinning. saves climbing up and down all day, which is very fatiguing. It is NOT a LIVELOAD device, merely a way to pull ones self sideways.

It is made from a Black diamond Talon (big wall rock gear), a eyering bolt, and several nylock nuts and loctite. I'm in the middle of machining a solid steel shaft for it, rather than using an eye bolt.

Its also very useful in the woods or on the canoe. Use it from a canoe, wing it towards shore and catch the ground or shrubs or trees, and pull yourself in. Use it to catch a runaway canoe on a river. Use it in the woods for pulling down dangerous widowmaker branches in your camp. (a very good WS&S skill to have) etc etc etc

it is NOT a live load device, nor is it meant for rock climbing or rappelling (in this configuration). Merely a tool for snagging stuff. I made one for a military buddy, he uses it for snagging triplines and safely activating such hazards.

That's pretty cool Bushman! I went the easy route...County Comm has those mini grappling hooks...the tines unscrew and can be stored on the inside. I've used it to lob a rope over a high branch for the food bag; my son is always finding uses for it:D It's a little larger than the peanut lighter and is perfect for use with 550 cord.

Those countycomm hooks do look pretty useful and cool.

The talon is a live load device, if you parred it with a closed eyebolt it would hold you all day and then some.
I didn't read (in this configuration) part. duh

Yea i wanted one of those (CountyComm), but they refuse to ship to canada. So i made my own

I may just do that, acklands graingier here has live load rated closed eyebolts in that size, rated for 2000lb SWL

Korupted..Will you post up a pic of that in your hand? show the inside with tines removed ect? If its not too much trouble anyways. I like the idea of having one but they are mostly to big/heavy. The collapsing ones anyway. Is the CC live load rated?

I also have one of the newer CC ones, I just *had* to have it, my inner gear lust took over :) Something about having a portable grappling hook, it's just cool.

due to liability reasons i obviously cannot make anyone one of these, but i cannot stop you from making your own........ :)

Please make me one. For I know if I finally get one and post a picture of it, the trolls will go berserk!

Here are some good in-hand pictures of the CC version:

Micro Grappling Hook

And Bushman is correct...it's NOT load rated.

I saw that jumping from tree to tree stuff on one of those logging shows, that shit's ridiculous.

I never really thought about how many utility purposes a grapple could serve, seems like a decent piece of gear.

Every time I order from CountyComm I contemplate grabbing one of their grappling hooks, but never do...I'm sure when I finally decide to drop the coin for one they will be sold out..

That grapple you made looks solid as hell, good job. I'd like to see what the "upgraded" one you're making will look like.

Hey Rock,

I'm not quite sure I'm understanding - you're using it as a grappling hook or just the weight to get the rope up and over?

Doc

Bushman I think I would trust yours. What happens when the CountyComm one comes unscrewed because the rope twisted under load or for some other reason?
I welded one up once but I haven't tried it...yet.
