More GEAR: mini grapple

Impressive. I'm going to pack one of these in my kit next to the pencil sharpener. Seriously. I've always wanted a grappling hook and now I can have one in my pocket? We live in an amazing era. One complaint: This forum keeps costing me money!

Is there a trick to getting the grappling hook down from the tree without climbing up?

yup. One has to be ALREADY up the tree (arborist) on their life line.:D If you toss this into a tree and snag it, its stuck,,,,,,unless you whip the rope back and forth - sometimes THAT may dislodge the hook.

Hey Rock,

I'm not quite sure I'm understanding - you're using it as a grappling hook or just the weight to get the rope up and over?

Doc

Sorry Doc; yeah, you can take the tines off and store them inside so it won't get snagged. I keep about 30 feet of 550 cord attached to the one in my pack and it's a handy weighted for a line. My son told be he used his this past summer when visiting the grandparents in FL. They camped out at a spring lake (14-16 feet of water so clear you could see the bottom) and he was using the small plastic kayak to search out stuff that had been dropped and used the grapple to snag them and pull them up (mostly junk but he did get a nice little anchor:D).

Other than looking cool, you really just need to use your imagination or it will end up just being dead weight.

The EOD guys in Afghanistan had a larger one (I think it was the bigger one on County Comm) that they carried to pull cover objects off potential IED's.

If I wasn't such a Neo-Luddite, I would definitely love to have one of these...

And, it would go well, with my pencil sharpener.

But seriously, who does not love the idea of a grappling hook. Every hero had one of these when I was a kid. Awesome! But, I have yet to buy one, yet.

Maybe I will install one in a utility belt, like Luke had....

I keep a grappling in my little jon boat. Most of the area I hunt and fish in has stumps and trees just under the water, especially like right now, when the water is up in the woods. You run up on one of those stumps good and all you do is spin around and around. The motor will not get you off the stump. Unless you can reach something, you may be screwed. I have helped more than one person out when they ran up on them. The grappling hook hasn't failed yet, as there are usually trees within a throw.

I welded up a great one for my dad when I was back in England, made it about 1' long so a bit big for ya kits, LOL ! He wanted it for removing reeds in a pond that he fished !!!
