:(

The Bradford Era reports another layoff at WR Case & Sons, effective in early July.

This is getting sadder by the month.

:(

That is unhappy news to say the least. If it can happen to Case, it can happen to any of the other knife manufacturers.

I work in manufacturing, we're hanging in there but man my heart goes out to the folks at Case. I know what it's like to watch the orders dry up and try to figure out how long you can hang on. I bought a couple new Case knives this year , wish I could do more. Tomorrow while I use one of their knives to do my job I'll be wishing them the best for their jobs.

That's terrible news, and just as their knives were getting really really great -- thinking of the chestnut swayback jack.

I have been trying to order a Case knife each month since I heard of the last lay off. I will look at Case knives online tonight and find another to order. The past half dozen I have ordered have all been very nicely made, good fit finish and nice walk and talk. It can't hurt their situation to keep buying....

Terrible news. I just picked up a small Case Amber Bone Texas Jack in CV. As someone said earlier, it can't hurt buying some.

Maybe they laid off by seniority and quality will take another jump:eek:

Sometimes it's better to just not say anything.

(Even when it's a poor attempt at humor. (If that's what it was.)

There are a lot of companies laying off these days. Some are because the company is about to go under, the others to keep their company financially strong. My company has done 3 layoffs this year and I know that we are FAR from going out of business. Let's hope for the best for Case and all of their employees and hope that they all get their jobs back real soon.

I can imagine that it's a tough business to be in right now.

A lot of Case's customer base is collectors and people are cutting back on collecting things these days. But they're a good company and they've been through times that are worse than this.

Hopefully things will start improving soon and they can hire most of these folks back. It hurts to see so many hard-working people (not just at Case but everywhere) struggling through no fault of their own.

Stop thinking about it and buy one. :) Buy some for Christmas presents for friends and family.

I'm going shopping tomorrow for a Case or two. I have a nephew showing some interest in knives and he's being officially hooked up by Uncle Jason tomorrow.

Maybe not exactly how I would have said it, but it sounds like Case is thinking along the same line:

“Reducing our work force is an unfortunate outcome of the current economic environment,” Chief Executive Officer Tom Arrowsmith said in the release. “We will continue to evaluate our staffing needs until the economy regains strength.
“In the meantime, we are focused on improving our internal processes and outperforming our competition. We remain committed to remaining the premier sporting knife manufacturer in the U.S.A.”

My hope is we are about to see Case enter a "Golden age". Quality sells in every economy. Maybe not in the numbers Case is used to, but if they build every knive with the attention to detail, and quality materials that went into my 2009 Swayback Jack CV, they will thrive.

As soon as I get some knives finished and sold I think I will get me another case stockman or something. I hadn't heard anything on this and hoped it was beggining to recover from the problems they had a few months ago. I hope there at the bottom already so they can start picking up now.

This is going to cement my new Case purchases tonight. Definitely picking up a stockman or two, we'll see what else.
