It's taken me longer than I thought it would to put it all together...but I am working on something a little bit different this time. The last week in the Smokies was partially about a much needed family vacation, the first five days, and partially about site reconnaissance and meetings to arrange some different shooting locations for the project I am working on, the last two days. I am putting together a pretty extensive thread, so far about 130 photos that still needs to be whittled down some, but I am going to do it with a Tolkien-esque narrative just for fun. Some of the photos aren't so great this time, on some it was too late in the day and the lighting was really bad, but I found more places I will go back to. On one day I spent half the day removing leaf litter and debris away from a hundred-yard-long section of wall ruin on a long unused trail. I have a solid plan for this winter and next autumn now. I plan to have the thread up on Wednesday or Thursday, so should be a nice break from day to day reality if I get it right. Two of the knives that figured most prominently were the Gaucho and the Rapscallion. I had much fun using these two :)

Brian,

There was a rumor that we might have the pleasure of your company at TrackRock. Saved a seat for you around the fire.

I know Tony, I had planned on attending and taking photos. Then I stayed in Gatlinburg two extra days after stumbling across a few ruins on long unused trails that are perfect for the imagery I am going for. I left the Little River gorge just west of Townsend and just south of Gatlinburg just after sunset on Thursday, exhausted and cramping from nearly head to toe from letting myself get low of fluids while following out old over-grown trails in the mountains. I had planned to rest a little when I got home and head to trackrock. But after being stuck in traffic for a while, and having to pull over and walk off some of the cramps for a while, I arrived back home about 1 am to find out the wife's car was broken down at her work place and having to get it home. By the time I finally got to lay down I was well beyond exhaustion, and I nearly completely missed the passing of Friday all together. Sorry man, I really wanted to be there this time.

You were missed. Seriously. Bill and I got our pipes out and burned some smooth tobacco, and Justen joined in for some fine fine cigars around the fire. But I understand completely.

Those two pics are so great Brian. They really do give you the feeling of being transported you to a different time and place. Other than the pinstripes, (not sure if they had g10 in middle earth) the knives are perfect. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thank Todd. I don't suppose they would have had G10, but they could have easily had dyed organic materials. Plus in Tolkien's description of the magical toys which were of Dwarf making that came form Dale, that Bilbo gave out at his farewell birthday party, and the skill of the artisans and craftsmen among the dwarfs, there are a lot of openings for things that exist today but did not exist at the time Tolkien published the stories. He also mentions Bilbo, having become more enlightened on his first journey with the Dwarfs, being annoyed with the ignorance of the sheltered Hobbits of the Shire. So while Sam carried his flint and tinder on the journey east, it could be that Bilbo, who was often visited by the Dwarfs and "other strange folk" over the years, may have had something more like our ferrocerium with him during the the time of his aimless wandering on his journey from Hobbiton to Rivendale, and on to Dale and the lonely mountain. He had long been know for his great cooking, and his love of cooking, so it only stands to reason he would have been doing a bit of that over the years of his aimless wandering to the east.

Very cool, I'm looking forward to this! I know you're having fun with it but thanks for all the time you're putting into this and sharing.

good pics Brian, missed you this weekend. I told the guys you might show, maybe you can make it next spring.

BTW, you missed out on a huge, loaded persimmon tree right next to the barn.

Hey Mist! Nice collage in your pics above! What is that knife in the first pic with the wedge cheese?

Thanks man, that one is a Gaucho, my current favorite Fiddleback :)

Cool, I am glad others are interested in this project. Yes I am having fun with it, because it is a labor of love to put it lightly. It is something the idea began hatching for years ago. I have done a lot of similar pictures in pencils sketches and pen and ink years ago, and at one time considered approaching it with acrylic paints, inspired by various still lifes I did in art school as a kid. The story of Bilbo played a very significant role in helping me maintain my own moral compass at a critical time in my young life.

I've seen the photos, I missed a LOT more than just a persimmon tree, but yeah, I would have definitely enjoyed that. There were just obstacles to great for me to overcome. I do plan on being there in the spring, and apparently I need to plan on being there in the autumn as well!

Damn right. Spring and Autumn. Attendance is mandatory.

Because we need at least one rational and responsible person in the group.

terrific pics!

yes you did & ditto what Tony said

Once again, awesome photos Brian! I really like the one with the compass and salt box. I was wondering what knife you might be thinking about assigning to Aragorn? I was thinking that a Woodsman would be ideal for a Ranger from the North. :D

Everything looks great Brian. Those photos really do provide a stunning visual that takes you back to another time and another place!

Jim.. awesome looking woodsman there!

Pipes and cigars you say, that sounds like my kind of topic. What'd you guys smoke?

I will do my very best :) I don't mind the rational part, but take it easy on the responsibility part :D

Thanks Jim. I have logged a lot of hours with a Woodsman, and it is one of my absolute favorite models. But I'm not sure I would want to employ it as an offensive weapon, and Aragorn has a long history, though unknown by the Hobbits and people of Bree, of fighting Orcs and Goblins. etc. outside the western borders of the Shire. It is something that he has been doing for decades at the time Bilbo leaves the shire.I had originally planned on a Protagonist for Aragorn as soon as Andy released that model, but then Aragorn, or Strider at the time, is seen by the inhabitants of Bree as being a Rapscallion so the name fits, and the model has attitude. But as soon as I can afford one, because I really want one for myself anyway, I will be picking up a Protagonist, and it will figure in somewhere for sure. Maybe I'll land the right handle configuration and make it Legolas' blade...

Thanks Ryan, I am slowly getting the accenting colors and pieces dialed in. I will apparently, among other things, have a collection of small simple brass compasses, leather packs, and pipes before this is all said and done :)

Pipe tobacco was a varied lot. Cigars ranged from Cohibas to Davidoffs to Padrons, with a few Fuentes thrown in.

Is that a mustard and poppy seed cheese. My wife and I get that stuff. GREAT pics my friend.
