Also read a transcript by another hiker somewhere on the net, can't find the link now but she ran into him on a trail and talked to him. She felt safe talking to him because she was with a group that was a short distance down the trail behind her.

Said that she came to a split and he went the opposite direction, but as she and her group were finishing out the hike that he was coming down the trail behind them. Probably thought she was alone and doubled back on her only to find her w a group:thumbup:

Huh, interesting. I bet that other girl is thanking her lucky stars that she did not go alone on that hike.

Well they have found both of his vans. Tons of people saw him and are contacting the various law enforcement agencies. He's being investigated for the Dunlap murder in FL and the Bryant ones in NC and I think a couple others so he will probably ge the death penalty.;)

I hope somebody adopts his poor dog and gives it a decent live:thumbup:

Yes, this story is very upseting on various levels.

:( :grumpy:

So much for the no weapons on the trail attitude of the granola sect.

They will rationalize this like they do everything else Don.

"he was one bad apple"

"we dont let one incident sway us from our mother earth goal"

Blah BLah:barf:

I know. One of the things about a tragedy is, you're supposed to learn from it. Most don't...unfortunately. Strange world, strange people sometimes.

Let's see lets go alone, by ourselves, on a deserted trail, with no means of protection. I'm not criticizing this woman or blaming the victim here. The attitude has to change though. You are not taking a violent attitude, merely preparing for the worst - and its not just people that you have to worry about out there. Preparing to defend oneself is just the same as preparing for any type of danger on a trail.

First we would have to get a handle on the media because they're so stupid it's beyond belief. When Ralston broke the rules and ended up severing/breaking his wrist/hand to get it from underneath a rock and he made it back, he was hailed as a hero. Went out alone, didn't tell anyone what he was doing and didn't even have a sharp enough knife to cut his own hand off. Now, the last thing is not tongue in cheek as you might think - someone "experienced" will have TOOLS and a dull knife is like an unloaded firearm as far as I'm concerned. Having a knife blade that you have to use like a halfassed surgical saw is not indicative of being skilled at anything except carrying around a dull knife.

The other guy that got lost (Mr. Kim) and wandered around until he died from exposure, yes, he was brave for doing that and the media pointed that out. But more than one news story called him, "...an experienced outdoorsman." Or something close to that. They don't want to hurt peoples feelings, offend the family or whatever. But the simple fact of the matter is, the guy did some very stupid things that led to his untimely demise and his family was very fortunate to have survived the ordeal.

A couple years ago, a half dozen people or so died from carbon monoxide poisoning because they were...stupid. That stings, but DAMN, you don't know that you can't run a generator in your house or cook on a BBQ grill designed for outdoors use only?

About five years ago, Maryland had a snowstorm that was one of our once in 12 year snowstorms. The only reason they didn't consider it a blizzard, proper, was because the winds were not sustained at a certain level - but it was a blizzard as far as I'm concerned. About 6 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning because they think if they leave the windows of the car cracked and the engine running, the heater won't keep them "toasty enough." So, they kept the window up and took the dirt nap. A couple of them didn't know to get out of the car to clear away the tailpipe, graveyard dead.

Two of them were potheads who enjoyed the ultimate high, in Denis Leary's lexicon, they're dead now. Went out to get high in a car and passed out with the engine running. W h y d o y o u t h i n k t h e y c a l l i t " d o p e ? " :D

People sometimes get smashed because they stay in their car and never thought that a large snowplow on the front of a tandem dumptruck was going to be coming through on the shoulder - smashed. Dead.

All of these things have to be taught and the media has to be muzzled before any normalcy can be hoped for on anything relating to the gun issue or real world self-defense, which means there will never be a state of normalcy when it comes to these topics. It's just not going to happen.

Actually the trail is supposedly well traveled. Supposedly she went on it all the time alone and with a friend.

NUMEROUS hikers on the trail spotted she and Hilton together during the day. That is how they were able to ID him. So it's not deserted.

When they described him a former employer recognized who it was and called and gave law enforcement his name and license #

Also supposedly she knew karate and apparently fought him. However yeah a knife or something would have probably given her an advantage.

Just goes to show that Man is the most dangerous animal.
A weapon may have helped the poor girl, but probably not unless she had it locked and loaded and in her hand when he jumped her. The best protection is always a trustworthy buddy.

What did Harrison Ford as Han Solo say in Star Wars? Something about hokey religions and ancient weapons being no match for a good blaster? :D

I believe strongly in stout hiking sticks, knives and guns. The whole unarmed thing is a last resort and you shouldn't start your defense with the last resort. Just my opinion.

Deserted was probably the wrong word. Isolated would have been better. The point I am making is, there was opportunity, that this man was aware of, to commit a crime with a high likelyhood of it being unobserved. It is great that we caught him, but she is still dead. Lord knows she could have done everything right and still be dead, but my point is that people's attitudes are skewed towards the unprepared side.

There was an interesting statement on a hiking log somewhere I read.

Apparently the hiker was hiking w/a group of people but she was ahead. She encountered Hilton and he talked to her and asked if she had a cell phone and some other stuff.

Anyway she said she didn't feel too skeered because her buddies were right behind her but when they got to a fork in the trail he took the opposite fork.

Then she said on that fork her buddies caught up to her but coming down the trail to the cars they looked back and he was behind them:eek:

My guess was that he doubled back thinking he could suprise her from behind and was thwarted when he saw her with a group.

My guess is he took Emerson and the NC hikers by suprise while taking off their packs or something because they found evidence suggesting he abducted them right by their cars.

Don, regarding the dumb ways to die i.e. carbon monoxide, not learning, I'm reminded of this quote:

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -- Albert Einstein

Meredith is inspiring on one count: she fought like a banshee, at least.
