I'd like to request that Gold members get a few more PMs if you please. I pretty much have to delete PMs EVERY DAY because I blast through my 50 that fast, just buying and selling, not much meaningless chatter there I assure you.

Come on, on the green site you get a 600 PM limit for the same membership fee. The PM feature is really an essential part of successful trading and I feel 50 is just a bit minge. How about a 100 even eh?

Muchas gracias!

So what you are saying is that you are buying and selling at such a high volume that you should be classified as a high volume seller?

I don't like comparing this site to others. They never measure up :)

I'll think about it, no promises.

For $25 more dollars you can upgrade to Platinum. You get 6 time the amount of PM's as a gold member...that's the real reason I went Platinum.

JD, free site: 150 PMs allowed.
CK&G, free site: 200 allowed.
BF Gold Membership ($35/yr. IIRC): 50 PMs allowed.
I won't even compare that to a Cove Membership (Mark already did)

Thanks, Mark, for bringing this up.

FWIW Joshk has a PM filing system that works.

It's in his sig still I think

Why do people assume that PMs are only for buying and selling?
How else can you communicate with other members? I mean, I receive about 10-20 PMs a week, maybe 10% of those are deal-related. Do you have any idea of the PITA it is to go through your PMs on a daily basis to choose the ones you need to keep because you need to free some space.
And it is besides the point, really, what you use PMs for, the real point is why does BF is the forum that allows the lowest amount of PMs among all knife forums?

If you're selling so much stuff here that you run out of space that quickly, I think you can afford to upgrade to Platinum.

Did you even read my post?
Who says PMs are for only for selling?
Most free sites offer more PMs than the gold membership on BF.
Who are you to tell others what they can or cannot afford?

Have you tried this new-fangled thing called "Electronic Mail"? AKA "E-Mail" as it's often shortened to? It's quite amazing. It's like writing a letter, but it only takes seconds to send instead of days. No postage either; you can totally do it for free.

In all seriousness, PMs take database resources. Resources cost, which is why Spark has chosen to limit PMs to paying members. You can compare BF to JD or some other sites...yet you can't. JD or USN don't come even remotely close to the traffic or membership numbers that BF does. Yeah, BF could probably give paying members more PMs, I don't disagree there. That's up to Spark and he's thinking about it. But assuming that it's as simple as changing a setting is ignoring a lot of things that Spark has to weigh and balance.

Despite that, I will say that 50 PMs is pretty low, $25 Gold Membership cost or not. If you keep ones you've sent and received, and assume several messages/replies per conversation, that's only a few conversations you can keep track of at any time. If a Platinum membership allows 300 at $50, 150 at $25 seems fair to me.

But be it 50 or 150 or 600, I would still say that if a conversation is likely to go on for a while, take it to email.

I would much rather get email than PMs. It's easier to follow the conversation. I don't have to run back and forth to the Inbox and Sent folders to clear them out. I even put my new Bladeforums email as my signature line.

That's a third party solution, the fact remains that 50 PMs for a paying membership is petty. It is less than any free site.

If you have 100k members, assume 30% pay. 30k * 50 = 1.5M messages.

That's a lot of messages, not counting the dealers with 600(?) PM's and Platinum with 300 PM's.

You could always download the pm's as a text file or CSV and THEN delete them.

+1.

Personally I hate to delete anything. I don't delete email, I don't toss memos. And it has helped at times to have an archive. You don't have to go through and cherry pick what you think you won't ever need.

Why not email? Uh, because I like PM's. PM's typically directly relate to BF business / people.
