Nice informative threads on that new Mayo/buck knife and I just joined the line :D

But some questions came to my mind which seem to not be covered yet

Can someone "in-the-know" post pics of the knifes back and of a closed one ?

Will Paul Bos do the heat-treat of the S30V - and at what RC is it planned for ?

Will the edge be Bucks Edge2000 or some special Mayo-bevel ?

Thx

Klaus

I would guess on the heat treat, and say that Buck will do it in house, but every heat treat that they do is according to the methods that Paul Bos dictates. From what I understand, he only does some of the more limited runs, and for the rest proscribes how to do them.

As far as those other questions, no clue.:(

Would like to know though.

Klaus,
Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the knife. I have not even seen it yet myself and I live here!
Paul Bos will be helping witht he heat treatment and as far as I know, it will have the E2K edge.
Hope this helps,

Thank you Joe - hopefully with the release date coming closer there will be more information available - and even you might see one then :D

Merry christmas to you and the Buck family

Klaus

Thank you Logan, as this pic is frontside and open I asked for closed and backside pics.

Yea, well me no reed so good.

But with the nice responce, I'm sure that I will spend a lot of time looking for one.

This is what Paul posted in another thread on his S30V H/T - not shure though what the Buck/Mayo blade will be run at. Klaus

Well Guys, It seems everybody is haveing fairley good luck with S-30-v, It seemes to be very heat treat friendley. I have run the hardining temp. from 1900 to 1950, Tempering from 400-950, Cryo. after hardining, to Cryo. after first Temp. After alot of testing by Strider, Rob Simonich, and Jerry Hossom this is what we came up with. Preheat @ 1550 deg. F. 1950 deg. F.for 30 Min., Rapid gas quench, Cryo. @ -280 deg. F. for 8 hrs. Plus------ Temper @ 625-650 deg F. for 2 hrs. @ temp. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Final R\C-59.5-60. I do 3 tempers for hard use blades. for a higher R\C I temper @ 400 deg. F for 60-61. Have done some for a customer that wanted them tempered @ 925, they came out R\C-58. We will be doing more blade testing in the future, will let you know what we come up wih. So far it seemes like it will be a prety good all around blade steel. Hope this helps.

Tom emailed some reply too:

I thought all those questions got answered in the buck forum. Paul will heat treat the knives, I am not sure about the edge thing but they will be sharp, have not see a pic of the back but they should look just like one of my knives as pictured on my website. Tom

I almost got to see one today. It was in QA but I did not get down there in time. Tomorrow.

We are preparing for our annual sales meeting next week and getting samples of all our new products ready to give to the reps. This year, instead of hand making prototypes, we are ahead of the game and are giving pilot production runs as samples.

The first ones will be carefully heat treated by Paul. Once we dial in our process then Paul goes back to a supervisory/advisory role.

The RC's we are targeting for the S30V will be optimal for the steel. I was thinking 60-61 like we are getting on the BG-42 but after reading your post from Paul I am not positive it will be that high.

I will verify with Paul.

Paul heat treats custom S30V blades to 59.5-60Rc. That provides the best balance between hardness and toughness, and with 4% Vanadium the blade wears extremely well. Great steel.

Sat down with Paul Bos this morning to review his email to me:

CJ: the R\C on the S-30-V is 59.5-60. Our process for heat treating this steel has been tested by strider and several others, and seemes to be the best so far, We will be doing more testing in the future. If you need anymore info just give me a buzz. Paul.

Paul has been working with Crucible on refining the heat treating procedures for the S30V. He is working with a number of his custom knife makers as well as the strider guys...and us

His gut reactions to the S30V were that at 59.5-60 it compares to the BG-42 at 60-61RC for edge retention (due to the high Vanadium) and gives a little better corrosion resistance. We did not talk about it but I would assume that being softer it would have better ductility as well. Paul does not have a lot of use for corrossion resistance as he takes such good care of his stuff but for those of you like me who come home from the field dead tired and "let it wait til morning", a little corrossion resistance stands us in good stead.

Bill Keys, our Engineering Manager was in my office this morning with...duh duh duhdaaa A Buck/Mayo TNT collaboration.

I have to say I was impressed. Action was flawless, just the right tension for secure lock up/easy unlocking(no thumbwear), hair popping sharp, not a tool mark on it...I asked and Bill assured me they all will look and perform like this.

Hats off to Paul Naranjo on our engineering staff and Tom Mayo who continued to work with us long after the design was done.

I have carried a Buck Litning for the last 5-6 years and it is now getting retired by this time next week.

Two words that comes to mind are Classic and Flawless...

I wonder what Tom is going to bring us next
