More Rust spots on INFI

My Basic 9 has almost all of the coating either badly worn or gone from using it a lot. The uncoated parts get a surface discoloration but it doesn't really look like rust. (and never rust pits) When I use it I wipe it off and afterward the uncoated parts of the blade actually resemble a gun that has been color case hardened! It's weird - it has a lot of colorful swirly patterns on the metal.

To protect the uncoated parts of the blade I use whatever oil is closest. Breakfree, 3 in 1 oil, motor oil, whatever! As long as it repels water, it's good enough to prevent rust. If I was going to store it for a long time without use, I would probably coat it with Ren Wax.

I'm glad to hear it was just pieces of kydex on your blade!

I live on the water as well and have been splish-splashing around in, on or near salt water for most of my adult life. My guins, knives and gear need attention and still show some seasoning from being in and around this environment. Here's what Ive found over the years:

WD-40, Great for dispursing water after a fresh water cleaning. It can be sprayed on just about everything but evoparates and therefore isn't the best for long term storage.

Mineral Oil, I use it on all of my knives, especially the ones that will be in contact with food, or at least food that I will be eating.;)

Motor oil, Great, great stuff for protection in and around water and salt water. It is oil and has additives that fight corrosion and other harmful to metal stuff.

Militec, Very good firearm and folder lubricant, I guess it also has protecting qualities but have cheaper stuff for widespread (pun intended) protection.

RIG, A gunsmith supply grease that is great for long term protection and application to areas that have already started to get aaway from you.

YMMV.

CLP, What gun fancier doesn't keep this stuff at the ready in every corner of the garage, house, gun room and tool box. Good for cleaning and lubricating but, like Militec, I have my Mineral Oil and Motor Oil for coatings.

Mine don't. The area I live ist really a wet spot. Many tools do rust instantly here. Not my busses. My Basic 3's coating is long gone. I soaked it in saltwater for over 18 hours, in a warm place, no rust on it after that.
take care

Small distinction to draw:

Mineral SPIRITS don't protect the metal. It's just used as an evaporative transport medium for the Tuffglide in your Tuffcloth.

Mineral OIL will protect the metal, as noted by several others.

FWIW, there's quite a few threads on rust prevention/elimination products and techniques that can be found with a search here on BFC.
