I have read all the great reviews and watched many vids, but I still have to ask. Should I get a Southard?

It's my birthday today, 40th, and I want to treat myself to a new knife. I've been thinking a mid tech is what I wanted, it'd be my first. And thinking that it's for my 40th, it should be special.

But then I keep reading the about the Southard. I looked at Striders, Lionsteel, CRK, and a couple others. And like anything, some of them have a had a problem or two here and there. And I this will be a user.

But now after reading so many great reviews on the Southard, I'm thinking it'll be money well spent.

So let me quit rambling and try to get to the point. Do you feel the Southard is "special" enough? That is, would you choose it for a "monumental", so to speak, birthday gift to yourself? I'm thinking so..

***UPDATE***

My new Southard showed up today, and WOW! This is a nice knife, best one I have yet. The closest comparison I have is my ZT 0560, and it now takes the back seat. This Spyderco is simply outstanding, fit, finish and hardware are excellent to perfect. The flipping action is functions effortlessly. I can only imagine how much better it'll get. This one's definatly going to find a spot in pocket for quite a while.

Is a great knife produced by a great producer and designed by a great designer as good as a great mid tech knife produced and designed by a great designer?

For the price I vote yes.

I'd vote yes as well. A Southard is high on my wish list. I've heard nothing but good things (aside from the "its ugly" complaint, which is an opinion on aesthetics and unimportant if you're looking for a user).

I don't think you will be disappointed. It is a very well made, high quality knife. If you've seen the videos and read the reviews, then you know all the good that comes with the Southard.

Go for it! I like my Southard more than my Sebenza! I actually sold it after picking up a Southard and an Alias 1. Southard is my favorite Spyderco.

I received a Southard flipper today. Bought it at a good price from Roger at KnifeWorks. With only an afternoon to go by, I have to say that I am very impressed.

Nice Mannlicher!

I received my shipping notice, hopefully I should have it by early next week!

I love my Southard, it is my favorite knife so far in my collecting. It is a perfect edc and the steel and slicing abilities are unbelievable. I am enjoying mine a lot. Totally worth it.

I couldn't figure out how to take a decent hi-res picture of it, so I did a short video using my Android tablet. It's a terrible video and the camera on this device sucks, but I love this knife. I think it's right up there with Hinderer's XM, and it's actually a little more finely produced than my ZT 561. Like the Sibenza the pivot tension is irrelevant to centering and almost irrelevant to the smoothness. The blade shape is actually a little more like the ZT 777 than the Hinderer slicer. Yeah, I don't think you can find a better knife for the money, frankly. Not right now, anyway.

I own a Sebenza 21 and they are awesome knives! However I much perfer the Southard. This knife is perfect. I love the f&f, steel and ergos. Get the Southard and pocket the extra $. Lol

I'm about as OCD as you can get about all of my purchases, knives or otherwise. I've been nagging everyone around here for knife comparisons. steel details. lock details. etc for quite awhile, and spent way too many hours on youtube watching reviews. I just made a post in the general discussion section that above all of the other knives I've considered, the Southard will be the one to start my collection. I certainly don't have the experience with knives most of the other folks around here do, but I am pretty good and sifting through large amounts of information rationally. In this particular case it was oddly easier than I thought- there wasn't a single bad review from any credible source. A few little matters of preference that can go one way or another, but no negatives from a largely critical group of people and many of them calling it their favorite knife ever? I was sold.

Well 2ac, you're not going be disappointed. I have to admit I was initially apprehensive about throwing down more than 2 Benjie's on a knife but those fears were laid to rest when it arrived, the Southard just oozes quality. I'll add another "totally worth it" for good measure. So NjHart, are you still sitting on the fence or have you pulled the trigger?

I'll be ordering mine tomorrow. I like high quality and I enjoy good pragmatism. Beautiful knife, seems ok left handed, perfect quality, great steel, and fits almost every need I could have. If money were no object, maybe a 3.5" hinderer would beat it out in utility and desirability for me, but its shockingly close given the ridiculous price difference. I'm indecisive about everything, but I feel pretty confident in this choice.

I've had to adjust my attitude about quite a few things since I decided to try a Southard.
-Don't like buying knives made abroad
-Don't care for flippers
-Don't care for Ti knives
-Was obsessed with knives weighing less than 4oz

One thing led to another and I ended up with a brand new Southard. From the moment I held it in my hands I knew it was a keeper not only as a great knife to look at but one I have heavily used since day one. The ergos are great, they way it curves out of the way in the pocket is great, the deployment and lock up is great, the grip is great, the steel has surpassed my expectations, the sturdiness and quality of build is great, etc... I simply cannot find a fault with this knife. I owned a Seb 21 for a couple months but I just didn't gel with it and to be quite frank find the Southard a better all around knife and one I am not afraid to put to heavy task.

I am sitting at work, reading the forum with the knife in hand!
