More Southard...**Update, Got It!**

I've had to adjust my attitude about quite a few things since I decided to try a Southard.
-Don't like buying knives made abroad
-Don't care for flippers
-Don't care for Ti knives
-Was obsessed with knives weighing less than 4oz

Well, you didn't have to break that one much at 4.1 oz. Which is pretty awesome for a knife that large.

I have read all the great reviews and watched many vids, but I still have to ask. Should I get a Southard?

It's my birthday today, 40th, and I want to treat myself to a new knife. I've been thinking a mid tech is what I wanted, it'd be my first. And thinking that it's for my 40th, it should be special.

But then I keep reading the about the Southard. I looked at Striders, Lionsteel, CRK, and a couple others. And like anything, some of them have a had a problem or two here and there. And I this will be a user.

But now after reading so many great reviews on the Southard, I'm thinking it'll be money well spent.

So let me quit rambling and try to get to the point. Do you feel the Southard is "special" enough? That is, would you choose it for a "monumental", so to speak, birthday gift to yourself? I'm thinking so..

For what it is worth I just had one here that a customer was gracious enough to leave with me for a time and I would say yes its a very well done folder. I liked everything about it. Only thing that could maybe add to it would be the inlay metal lock like on the M4 Military to make a replaceable contact when it wore out years down the road. Otherwise its pretty much complete and ready to roll. I liked the shape of the blade probably the best. I would rather have olive drab handles than the khaki/brown but hey it works and speaking of that material, the insert for the lock block using the matching material is a nice touch. That should be standard issue on frame locks with thin lock cuts in my opinion.

RetiredGuns, I hear ya, I too was hesitant about spending $200+ on a Taiwanese knife. But it appears that factory's production and QC are second to non.

And STR, I've been checking your forum and clips. I may have to give you a shout. I don't require a deep clip, but man, those sure do look nice.

I also already have a Barry H. scale in mind. What do ya think of silver twill? Might be a bit too pimpn'.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I'm looking very forward to Monday's mail.

I own a Sebenza 21 and they are awesome knives! However I much perfer the Southard. This knife is perfect. I love the f&f, steel and ergos. Get the Southard and pocket the extra $. Lol

Good to read that, and I love the Southard in the very short time I've had it. Have always wanted a small Sebenza, and wondered - briefly - if I should have held off buying the Southard yesterday. The Southard is awesome.

I'm a bit of a Spyderco hater (the hole and related hump don't do it for me) but I'm quite taken with the Southard. It's a great knife. The blade is maybe a bit thicker than is ideal for some tasks, but I love the way the knife feels and handles in general. IMO, it's on the ugly side, though.

My Southard is in Barry's hands now, getting prettied up with an LSCF scale job, and though I have plenty of other knife options while it's away, I can't wait to get it back.

I think you'll be happy. :)

I believe all the companies you listed will fix any problem with any knives they make. Also take a look at hinderer, I'm dead serious, I used to think it was all hype until I got mine. I haven't put it down for the past 2 weeks and its kicked my CRK, strider, zts and spydercos out of their normal front right pocket. I do still carry other knives in other pockets but nothing comes close to my hinderer. Good luck in your choice, I know it's a tough one!

I don't think you will be disappointed. I picked one up yesterday and I love it. I say go for it. Happy birthday!

I like the Strider, but not too much their storied past. But let's not get into that. I also don't care if they'll fix it, no questions asked, if it's sent away every other month.

And I do own a ZT 0560, but no way will I/can I afford an actual Hinderer.

I'm pretty confident that I'll be happy with the Southard. I can hardly wait to get the mail tomorrow.

Have the southard and large sabenza. The former is much better. Twice the price, though.

Posts like this contribute very little without explanation. Why do you consider the Seb "much" better? I have had/have both and while the Seb is indeed a great knife I cannot honestly come to the same conclusion. The tolerances, lockup, smoothness, ergos of the Southard are on par and in some ways better. The steel used isn't even close as 204p has proven to be much more durable than either S30V or S35VN. So at nearly twice the price, is it twice the knife?

I'll be ordering mine tomorrow. I like high quality and I enjoy good pragmatism. Beautiful knife, seems ok left handed, perfect quality, great steel, and fits almost every need I could have. If money were no object, maybe a 3.5" hinderer would beat it out in utility and desirability for me, but its shockingly close given the ridiculous price difference. I'm indecisive about everything, but I feel pretty confident in this choice.

I have arthritis so try to practice deploying mine with both hands as it's good for maintaining dexterity (which, ironically, comes from the root word meaning right-handed).
