More Stopping Power - .40 or .45?

Wow, lots of responses! Thanks guys. When I originally posted the thread, I was using stopping power to describe "maximum damage inflicted in a single shot."

All 3 calibers will have no problem dispatching a human, so for home defense, all three are good choices. My question was more academic I suppose.

A better question to illustrate the academics of it is which of the three is most likely to fell a bear in a single shot? We aren't talking .44 mags here btw.


Also, I should have known before posting this would be a Chevy vs Ford type debate. Wasn't trying to start trouble haha.
 
I think that if you had identical projectile profiles of a monolithic non expanding bullet, a hard cast 200grain SWC (H@G68) in .45acp and custom 200grain SWC in .40, Mr Bear would not notice the .050 inch difference in diameter, as much as the increased depth of the .40 wound channel due to the difference in velocity
