More than one Grinder

I have often wondered this and people have asked me why and beside saying just because ;):D i cant really think of a reason. I mean i guess if you had a grinder that could only run a platen and you wanted to use a contact wheel then i could see having another one. but after building my KMG clone and seeing how it can do anything i want and how its supper simple to change wheels or tool rests i don't see a need. but i guess if you just did not want to be bothered by changing tooling then you could have many grinders. Now this does not mean i don't want more grinders at all . in fact i have been keeping a Kean eye on the grinder plans being worked up on the for sale page.I think it would be handy to have another one for a student to use when he/she is there so thy can watch me and then grind. I guess i was just wondering what your reason for having or wanting another grinder is. thanks

you pretty much nailed it.

moving from one task to the next should be organized and fluid, and changing tooling while doing so is often neither.

I'm trying to think if I can get buy with only 3 Belt grinders, Not counting the stone grinder and angle grinders and 2 belt sanders, spindle sander.

I have a KMG and a clone and I find it handy. One is set you with a multi wheel head al the time and the other gets the small wheel or flat platen or whatever. I am thinking of making a 1HP variable speed that runs 1" belts.

I have a Coote and would love to add a dedicated small-wheel grinder to my shop. Not that I've ever seen one.

i would love a 2 kmg
one would be set up slow and one fast (i have VFD on mine now )
i have a 1700ish rpm and a 3500 ish motor
the slow one would have a platten set at my most used sharpening angle so i would not have to change the angle of the blade
i could then jsut walk up and make sure the blade is vertical and cut in a nice edge withought guessing hand angle from one side to the other

I have a kmg on 220v. I would really like to have a decent grinder (like a coote) that ran on 120v that I could mount on a cart. Then when it is time to grind micarta, or various woods, I could just wheel it outside and let mother nature take care of the clean up.

Right now I have a Kmg with a small wheel and my Grizzly. Its nice to not have to change anything and pop back and forth. Not really necessary but handy. Anything that lets me just think about the knife I am building and not the tools is good in my book.

It's the same reason you have multiple drill presses, I have 4. Each is set up for an individual operation and that's all it does. One has a slitting saw for cutting locks, one has a tapmatic and 2 are for drilling holes.

I thought I wanted another one but now I'm not sure. My current grinder design has platen, slack belt, 15" contact wheel, buff wheel and two different grit of .5" radius all without changing anything or stopping the machine. Plus, I went with forging knives because I don't like the idea of filing or grinding away a bunch of metal that I paid for; the better I get at forging the less I have to grind and I really want to be at a point where time spent on the grinder is 5 min or less to complete a knife. So, I really don't think I need another grinder.

What are you talking about??

LOL!

There's a picture of my grinder in this post it's the green machine on the left of the bench. The shiny thing above the contact wheel is the edge of the platen, above that is the slack belt. The two 1" diameter sanders are short lengths of belt rolled around and taped to the shaft in between two pillow blocks... mind you these are a little tricky to use now, since I added the platen, the platen braces are a bit in the way but I can still use them with care. The buff wheel is self explanatory.

I have two Variable Speed Bee Grinders and a Coote. I keep the Coote to show people why a three wheel design is better. One of the Bee Grinders is about ten years old and the other is maybe a year and a half.

I gave away my 1 x30 and my 2 x 42.

Are there more grinders on my want list? Sure, but the new shop is higher on the list. I'd love to represent the KMG in Canada for Rob. Maybe someday.

(other) Rob! :D

I remember getting my second grinder, and at one point actually wondering
why someone would need two grinders, thankfully those days are long gone.
Ken.
