So as I've been waiting dutifully for my first Becker user, I've been scanning the Becker threads and reading with much interest about other members knives and what they do with them. The useability of these knives seem second to none. In my reading though, I've come across something that gives me pause and makes me wonder...why do so many people here own more than one of a particular Backer?

More lengthily, what would be the need to own say 3 BK13's or 2 BK5's or...I get that one may want to keep something in the car that would be separate from that which they take say, camping or giving to another family member. That makes sense to me. But why would I want 2 BK4's? Owning multiple Becker knives isn't the same as owning multiple numbers of the same Becker. Help me...!

So to can see yourself in the mirror dual wielding 2 bk4s then go in the yard and fight every tree and wooden post to the death then go back inside and stare at them while drinking a victory beer for defeating the tree army.

3 13's for each sheath that holds one, 2 bk5's, one for food prep and one for work, 2 4's cuz i ain't choppin that chit by myself, grab that 4 and gimme a hand!

2 3's because we have two cars.
2 4's because chopping is more fun with a friend.
4 15's because everyone in my family deserves the best steak knife ever made.
A second 16 because someone was selling it with micarta handles and a kydex sheath for cheap and if I ever get around to it, I'll unload the steel and keep the bonus stuff and make a profit.
Multiple tweeners because I got some of the signed ones.
2 24's one for the truck and one for the work bag.
And those are the ones I could easily self-justify. Above and beyond that...just because.

Part of is that some of us do some customization of our knives.
I have 4 (I think) BK16s....I have modified the blade shape of two of them, and had plans for third. I also plan to make new handles for a couple of them. One will stay untouched - at least until I have some amazing modification idea, lol.
I have 4 BK 15s. One lives with my camping gear. 2 are to be stripped and rehandled for kitchen use. And the last one...well, the price was right, lol.
I have 2 - make that 3 - BK 5s. Again, one will be stripped down and is likely to see kitchen duty, one is a backup in case I ever screw up the first (since there was talk of it being discontinued), and the third is a Camillus version that will remain untouched. Did I NEED the Camillus? Nope. But I like the Camillus BKs; so when I had a chance to grab it, I did.
I recently purchased an extra BK 11. I'll be modifying it as I did my first one (to better fit my hand); and I will be putting them in the BK13 slot in the sheaths of my 9 and ?. I also have a SanMai BK11 that I purchased simply because it appealed to me. I suppose the scarcity of that version could have been a factor; but, like all the others, it all boils down to 3 words: I wanted it.

I don't yet have any duplicates, but I'll be getting another BK4 soon.... I want to have a backup of my favorite knife that is working its way out of production.

I own multiples because there are 4 in my family and everyone should have a good knife.

The dollar loses value every year and I have the disposable income to get what I want right now.

If I'm overly fond of a particular knife, then I buy a spare because shit happens. I have more then enough money to buy a spare and if something happens to one, it is replaced immediately at today's/yesterday's prices.

And I don't need a reason, if I want something, then I can buy 1 or 100.
'merica!

Oh - I have 3 BK2s, as well. A Blackjack, a Camillus, and a stamped KaBar.
Why? Because I got great deals on the KaBar (my first) and the Camillus (see my prior comment about liking the Camillus BKs)...and I bought the Blackjack because I didn't have one yet.

Some very interesting answers for sure, especially because I hadn't really thought about having to go out and fight the tree army by myself!!

As for use in the kitchen...well, I'm not a fan at all of home kitchen use with outdoors knives. Just a personal thing, and perhaps I could change my mind once I get a 5. I cook a ton and cannot envision using such a large handled knife at home. Outdoors is a different thing. I once had a Bark River Bird & Trout that went with me every time I went camping, but even with such a small, very capable knife, I never used it in the house. Different strokes for different folks, right?!

You and I are in the same boat.

I have 4 Beckers, no duplicates (and won two of them in contests), and no desire to go out and buy duplicates. I'm also considering getting rid of my 2, since I just don't use it much anymore. I do love my 9 though. Its my most used Becker by far (11 is too small, the 15 hasn't gone on an outing yet).

And I also agree about the outdoor knives in the kitchen thing. I have some decentish kitchen knives, and there is just no way a 5/15 could keep up with them in the kitchen. I could see myself with a BK5 at some point for a BBQ knife, for cutting brisket/tri-tip, etc but beyond that I'm not seeing how I'd use it in the food prep capacity (at least around the house).

So, I know I'm in the minority here, but just know you're not alone :).

I recently got another 5 and 15 after I found out they would be OOP soon. Great knives, and ya never know when you'll need a spare. I am planning on making a Christmas present for the wifey, a dedicated kitchen set of the spare 5 and 15. She, like most of America, just settles for whatever crappy cheap SS knife in the drawer when she cooks. I am trying to educate her.

Sometimes, the minority is an okay thing. I buy kitchen knives for the house kitchen. For the cost of a 5/15, one could have a great kitchen knife that will do everything they needed - and more. The Victorinox 8" Chef's knife is but one stellar example (and the most recommended knife by ATC). I don't need to do any batoning in my kitchen, nor do I need to show anybody that my outdoor knife will cut chicken in the house. Since I don't carry my kitchen knives with me camping though, I think a 5 or 15 would be pretty handy there.

I find the "family needs good knives" reason to be the best reason so far simply because it is IMO the most logical. Hell, if I had the money, I would own 8 Pentax DSLR cameras. For my needs, I've found them to be the best at what they do. At the end of the day though, all 8 wouldn't be coming out with me to shoot, so leaving them at home just seems like a waste, because in the final analysis, it's not about the camera, it's about the user...:o :)

Well sometimes one is not enough.
i like to have more than one of my favorite models.
Great value.

Its totally true. I've been gifting chefs knives for the past few years for Christmas and the like, people love them. That... and I get to try them out, and keep the ones I like, while re-gifting the rest. I get my favorite kitchen knife, they get a "hand sharpened chefs knife". Its a win win :).

Yep, I don't feel bad for only having 4 Beckers. If I use it, I feel fine owning it, if I don't, then I eventually want to get rid of it (hence me saying I might get rid of the BK2).

And I'm a dabbling in photography myself. Its a recent thing, so I'm really quite new at it, but I'm enjoying it. I grabbed a Nikon D7000 during the recent crazy Best Buy deal and have now jumped into the land of "lenses" :D.

Because Uncle E. has been out of his house long enough and I want to help him buy a new generator!

In all honesty, it's because they are worth it.

It is a sickness that lingers. Kind of like herpes, but more fun and without all the burning.

I am also in the minority. Kitchen knives are for the kitchen, the way I see it, and Beckers are for the outdoors. Though you could have purchased a set of Ethan's kitchen knives and then you'd have the best of both worlds. But I do love my Wusthof's. Those and a nakiri I just made for myself. I was using it tonight, and it is so thin it just slides right through onions.

Beckers, OTOH....you can't just have one, and sometimes a favorite pops up and you think, "that'd be a nice gift for friend X" and then it finds its way onto one pack or another, and the next thing you know, you've got 3 BK15's.....

Kitchen use is just fun. Tonight I cut an apple and a banana with a kukri just for fun and a post pic. I use everything I the kitchen. I tossed all my crap SS stuff in favor of vintage old dirty carbon thrift store and garage sale knives. Ok, I got carried away and collected way too many but that was offset by selling many other knife finds on ebay to the tune of over $300 in the month of January. I didnt lie to myself, i have around $200 to list tomorrow, i go sunday to sunday. Anyway, so now my kitchen(and a couple other spots) is full of sets of Forgecraft, Old Hickory, Ekco Forge, and other unnamed vintage carbon knives, virgin steel, sharp as all get out and just so well made, and cheap. A few Beckers in there will fit right in. That's just me tho...

I have no duplicates yet since I'm still collecting but I almost did just because their on sale but it sold out before I could buy.
