More than one

"The truth is out there, but the lies are inside your head." - T. Pratchett. You'll never get around to it....you do know that, right? It's easier just to keep it. This is the biggest lie we tell ourselves - "It's a great price, I'll just buy it and turn it around for a profit...."

I've got my suspicions about the generalized correctness of your statement. ;)

Dunk, clear some space. I was wrong in my previous PM!

I don't own any duplicates, until the RBK comes out. Then I'll have a few of those. But I can see the desire to have more because, well, modding. We like to make the knives our own, and sometimes it doesn't turn out the way we want, or we get another idea, or... you know. I'm not going to say it's one of those "you'll know it when you get it" things, but if the itch takes you, you may find yourself looking back at this thread and laughing. Or, it may never come. Or, you may lose your favorite, buy a new one, and then find it again immediately after the box arrives. There are many reasons to own multiple. The question, really, is what YOUR reason will end up being.

Kitchen duty, for me, at least, is a non-precise term. It doesn't mean the knife will only be used in the kitchen...especially in the case of the BK5. I do see me using it for food, whether inside or out. That pig we're doing this summer? I'm thinking the 5 is as good an option as any "kitchen knife" we have. Turkey? Roasts? Why not?
FWIW, the handles on most "kitchen knives" are smaller than I like; which may be part of the attraction for using the BK5.

I bought a back-up 4, 5, and 15 back when the rumors were circulating that they would disappear and Dex had them on sale. They are safely packed away for the improbable scenario where my originals fail.

Sometimes it works out profitably. I bought a lot of 28 knives for $35 on fleabay on time because it had a small Western fixed blade in it that was NOT in my collection. When the box arrived, most of the extra knives were Pakistani, Indian, Chinese junk... BUT... there were 2 old, used, decent condition straight razors from the early 1900s that I was able to sell for $40 and $50 bucks. I got lucky and happened to put them on fleabay just when a couple of someoneelses decided they needed to fight over them for their collections. :D:D:D

Which reminds me, I got another pair somewhere that came in a "lot auction". Gotta dig those out and send them off to a new home.

This. I bought a 7 early on in my "acquisition" phase and never loved it. It sat, no scales with drawings and more drawings being done, but I couldn't part with it. Took a not insignificant amount of steel off it, made a completely different handle style for it....and now I love it, despite never warming up to the original.......but - I keep looking at UNmodified 7's because, you know.....I don't have one. Same thing's gonna happen with my Machax. I've already modded it a bit and have some major reconstructive surgery planned, BUT....I actually Like the Machax the way it comes out of the box and will have to buy another to keep "stock".....for, you know, ah.....comparison.

But you are still left with, what....25, uh...imports that you say are junk. You kept them, right? So you kept the Western, sold 2 straight razors, and made a little profit. And you have a box of Asian junk....my problem is that I can't throw sh...tuff away that's useful (even if I won't use it and it's crap) and it's not saleable.....so now maybe I made a little cash, but I'm also storing crap that I'll never use or mod, and I think about all the shit that I have that I don't need every time I see the boxes - 'cause there are more than one....many more - and I wonder what the hell is wrong with me, that I can't get rid of stuff that is junk, and I can't sell......

I have a separate plastic tub labeled "To be sold." Once a knife goes in the bin, it only comes out to be lotted up and dumped. As I accumulate and box up of junkers, I put them on fleabay in lots of 10 or so and let someone who is attracted to the flashy bling give the stuff a new home.

You're a better man than I. I just can't buy the stuff in the first place, or it never goes away.

Medic. MEDIC. MEDIC!!!! Man delusional. Call 911 and the loonie bin. Someone thinks I'm a better man. :D

In seriousness, though. It's really a matter of self-preservation and storage space. Yeah, I'm on a farm with lots of elbow room, but if I kept every knife that came to me, I could build at least an LCM8, maybe an LCU. For a select group of the knives in my collection (about 100 or so), they arrived with a total of about 800 other knives. Some lots were 3 in, keep 2, sell 1. At the other extreme, 40 in, keep 1 sell 39. Most were in the 8-10 in, keep 1 or 2 range.

you guys over think this

just buy them :D

I have more then a few becker, but I never bought any duplicates until a few nights ago. I bought two bk15s and another bk9. The first bk15 because I wanted one before they went away. The other because I have always wanted to mod one and put a tanto on it. the extra bk9 is so I can mod it for a spear point.

I just bought my first duplicate. Of course, a 15. I keep seeing it on sale then sold out, so I got one when they came back in stock, can't beat the price. I'll prob grab at least one more...gotta spread it out to keep it under the radar. :D

The price is so good I could see myself ending up with a nice set of 4 or more buy the time the sale ends.

Yeah, they go up and down almost daily even from the same seller. Seems like their cheapest with most stock then go up when stocks low. I think 39.99 is the lowest and that's when you gotta order because they go quick. 3 times I hesitated and they were gone. Somebody's hoarding lol.

I now have multiples of many Beckers.

Pssst...Wanna know a secret? I'm quietly buying up all the Beckers so one day when the available public supply has dwindled to nothing, I can sell them for an enormous profit, buy an island and live on it surrounded by beautiful scantily clad women. That's my retirement plan. Don't tell anyone or it might ruin my plan.
