I've enjoyed the *few* recent threads about traditional pocketknives. I thought I'd try to spark some more interest in them with some pics of a couple of knives that I purchased this week. (OK - I just wanted to show off my new toys

)

The first knife is a Bailey Bradshaw DB111 lockback with a hand rubbed 3.5" 12C27 blade. The handles are gorgeous stag with stainless bolsters. The fit and finish is top-notch. A magnificent piece.

The second knife is a Case Pocketworn Copperlock with beautiful deep red jigged bone handles and nickel silver colsters. It has a 3" stainless blade. The quality is great - much better than some other recent Case knives I've seen. I'd love to see this knife offered with a carbon steel blade.

Anyone else want to show off pics of their favorite traditional patterns?

The Queen Robeson line is pretty much being ignored and I think is the sleeper of the year. Ats34 blades and selling as low as $25 dealer.

The trad. folders I've been looking at lately are in the Robeson ShurEdge Pocketeze line. Looks like Queen is taking these old designs and giving them ATS-34 steel for a very nice dress slacks knife. I think I've gotta have one of those little 2-1/2" pen knives. I like the whittler too.

Robeson also has a Strawberry Bone line with new patterns. Also includes an ATS-34 scout knife.

Any links to the Robeson line? I've seen a few ads in Knife World, but there's not a lot of info on Queen's website.

I bought a Wostenholm Barlow with Dogs Head blade and red bone scales recently . Not my usual knife purchase but a very nice piece all the same.
I have started a topic in the Collectors Corner that you might want to have a look at.
Ah yes, the lock back is stunning by the way! Do you have some contact details for Mr Bradshaw?

I could'nt agree more! The Queen knives along with Blue Grass Cutlery's are some of the best out there right now. And both at some very good prices so all can enjoy them. I'll be at SMKW for the Reprensentitive's weekend this Saturday and look forward to speaking to many of them there. Maybe I can talk some into joining us here at Bladeforums...

Speaking of Blue Grass, take a look at them doctor knives- especially the stag. nice stuff

Those are very nice pics, Senator. It's a welcome change to see some of the traditional stuff posted here. I also plan on taking a look at what Queen has to offer.

Senator
Case does make the copperlock with carbon steel blades.they have CV stamped on the blades. As far as I know they only use that yellow composite material for handles on their CV bladed knives.I wish they would use that steel on the ones with stag and bone handles.

SDW - yeah, I forgot about the yellow-handled knives. I hate that color handle though. I'd like to see them offer the CV steel in all handle choices.

mjbecker - His website is www.bpbradshaw.com but his server has been down recentl;y due to the East Coast flooding problems. His e-mail addy is nimnbail@sprynet.com .

LOVE that Bradshaw piece.

And, with luck, my Case Select XX stag whittler should arrive this week.....today ?
I have the stag Copperlock, too...very nice.
And I REALLY wish I could get bitten by the carbon steel bug. I try but I still have minor fits when I see little spots on my blades. Yeah, I know about looking after my knives. But I ain't going to live my life for them

Case offers the carbon steel, which some say that Case said is 1095 although Case calls it 'chrome-vanadium', in the yellow handled knives including the CopperLocks, and also in a chestnut bone. The 'Top of Texas' catalog is nice as they list whether a knife is carbon steel or stainless for most listed, something that I wish everyone else would do. I prefer carbon steel over 440A, 420, etc., but will entertain 440C and other higher end stainless if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. For instance Boker offers a large stockman in 440C but it seems to be available only in stag. Browning offers a medium in AUS-8 and rosewood, which is maybe a slight step up over the typical 440A, but not a large stockman in that combination.

A pattern that I hadn't been interested in but I ended up buying was a 'muskrat', in the Old Timer Improved Muskrat. It was available for a good price, evidently a never used one from an estate sale, so I picked it up as I always like the large Old Timer serpentine handle. Looking at it more closely I noticed that both blades were thinner than those on the trapper in the similar size and will flex rather easily. An elegant knife for the price.

The only custom slipjoint I have is a small Saddlehorn Trapper from Wally Watts that I picked up at the Blade Show in June.

It features very nice smooth red bone handles and ATS-34 blades ground and heat treated by Wally himself.

The brass liners are lightly but precisely fileworked in a very elegant manner.

Considering what some other makers are getting for similar work, the piece was a bargain at $250.

If you like traditional patterns, Wally Watts is worth looking at.

Hey, Senator, I just did a review of a Case Canoe in limited edition (500 made) Honey Appaloosa bone. It is in the Review forum. I really am falling in love with this knife. I have seen some pictures of a fileworked Sowbelly pattern in Blade and I really like the way that sucker looks, but $300+ is out of my range by a long shot. My next Case will probably be a Damascus one.

I have several Copperlocks and only use one of them and thats a mini Copperlock with CV blade.Believe it or not but some guys like it when their carbon blades get spots on them.I accelerated the Patina look on mine by sticking it in an apple a few times.I was told this by a big time Case collector, and it works pretty good. Now it looks like a genuine oldie.
That Case Select Whittler is a good choice, you have good taste : ^ )

Thanks for the info Senator-I have a feeling a few of us may be checking out Mr Bradshaws knives in the near future!

Well, my next purchase will be a slipjoint of some type... I've been drooling over some of the ones on the AG Russell website. There are a number of multi-blades in ATS-34 and a neat little white-bone single blade jack in AUS-8. There's a small Doctor's Knife pattern (by Schatt & Morgan) in ATS-34 but I think it's $50 or $60...

Where can a person find some pics of the other ATS-34 models from Robeson?

Jon

PS - no affiliation with AG Russell, I've just been hitting their site a little too much lately.

Wow! I am so glad this subject came up And that its being recieved so well. I posted a similar thread at rec. knives little over a year ago and was ridiculed. My argument was that my Cripple creek Barlow did a greater service for us "have to have and carry a knife group" than any long explanations. When I took out this knife at work or where ever all it did was draw positive attention and pleasent conversation. Even encouraged one very anti knife person to go out and buy a traditional style foler himself. Im looking for a new traditional knife as I lost the Cripple creek. Well I know where it is ( Ex Wife ) How about some makers and sites for this style. Specifacly I would like a traditional looking knife (barlow is my favorite) made of modern materials and techniques for under 300. Much under would be great but I could go that high.

Here is a pic of a case one hander. Its a linerlock but not in tradition of a Walker linerlock. Its more like a traditional type found on the old eletrician style knife. This a design I wish Case would do more with. Its kind of a hybrid compared with modern design. No clip. A gents knife.
