and to answer a few more questions

Dont get any cell service where I usually end up, and never used a GPS

The bolt action that Im holding in the first picts I posted is a Marlin .22 mag

I filter water through the bandannas before treating it with iodine

and I like redundancy, ever lose a piece of gear when your out and about?

And before anyone asks, yes it floats and will float my weight as well, because of the storm sacks in every pocket.

Great pics again. Wish the vest wasn't so expensive.

As far as the bandana before treating with iodine, would that take care of the cyrpto and other nasties?

Neato! Did you tell that critter that he shouldn't lie down next down to you? does your sleeping bag fit in there somehow?

Marmots are everywhere in the Sierra. I hear they are good eating, but haven't tried one myself.

Marmots are good if cooked good

The blue sleeping bag isnt mine, I used the thermo lite bivy on that trip, temps were in the 30s and I was fine ( also next to the fire)

Dont know about crypto, never been sick yet (knock on wood)

Ok, off for a weekend of Dove hunting, Ill get back to everyone later. Have a good holiday weekend.

Cryto is hard to kill with Iodine; chlorine dioxide is a better choice.
From my experience much of the water in the Sierra is safe to drink if you pick your sources. I have drank untreated/unfiltered water many times in the Sierra with no issues.

Wade,
What creek were you fishing in the photos?

Wade,
I use a military compass and had to use the GPS once to call in for a rescue. It was getting dark and I had to give GPS coordinates. With the cell phone I was able to notify the Helicopter pilot via their dispatcher of his path. They were flying a box formation search pattern the other way and I had to inform them to tell their Pilot to fly a 180 degree azimuth to my direction.
Something to think about with any unknown occurring incident. You never know if you have to notify someone immediately. Most Park Rangers or Local Authorities use scanners and can possibly pick you up on a two way radio if you had to. Determining the terrain and location you never know when it will come in handy. I am a firm believer in “it’s best to have and not need than need and not have” Especially in emergency situations. It does not have to happen to you. You could be saving someone else’s life. Just my .2 cents on this one, other than that great pic’s. You are definitely having the time of your life.

Another thought about the GPS. You can track your path and set up the way points to include camps, etc. If you use the area regularly you can set the saved locations on your computer at home. If anything was to happen where you were not back in the expected time your family members have a reference point and possible locations where you might be. They can email, fax, or just print a copy and have it with them. You can even post the copy somewhere in your car. For the cost of most GPS and weight it is definitely something to think about. Good luck on your adventures.

Wade, is that an M-14, it looks like one in the photo, or is it the M-1? like some of the others think on this posting.

It looks to me like the M-14 a weapon i love, just asking. Your friend at the post Donald S.

Its an M1A ( or a civilian M-14). Its semi auto only, the M-14 is semi/full auto.

The vest is a Special Ops Search and Rescue, there is a link in the first thread

wade- this is freakin spectacular! And it looks like you know your stuff when it comes to weapons, is that a USO scope ont eh M1a?

how does a pack feel over this vest?

you ever catch any flak about carrying in the hills?
