More Whittling!

I started whittling a hatchet handle the other day with a 2 lb hatchet. The blade was too thick so I went to my 18" 2 lb AK and that was too blade heavy. I ended up using my Crowell-Barker "competitive" chopper. It's 17.5 ounces and worked perfectly and was comfortable. I'm considering a 15" 24 oz KLUVK. Have you ever used one that heavy to whittle?

You bet! The axe handle at the top of this thread, as well as a bow were made with a CAK that weighed around 2lbs. You can even do very fine work with them; it's all about learning how to use them effectively. I have to say, it's great fun, and I look for every opportunity to use mine on a daily basis.

I wanted to add that I used the CAK for those projects because at the time it was the only khukuri I had, so I had time to get used to it.

I have been contemplating a CAK, M43 or ASTK. It seems like more weight in the handle would balance the knife better for whittling. Moving from 32 oz to 24 oz would give me a thinner blade too. This is my 1st khukuri so I don't really know what I'm doing. I'll try it again for whittling and alter my technique. I'm not giving up my 2 lb AK for chopping, it bits deeper than the hatchet I own when limbing. Does anyone have just one khukuri???

Nice work TC! Moose is very expensive! I just got a bunch of elk and your right it is more porous but I bet you could still get a bunch of good scales out of it. I wanted to use it for flint knapping billets and luckily it had bone still attached so its usable. A good three inch diameter moose beam will set you back a $100.

So nice to see some great usage of a KLVUK to make some nice tool handles TC. I love that you are using the tool in so many great ways even creating it's own K&C. And then there is Bawanna's grips, I am finally back to where I am able to carry my EDC again around the house. I sure missed the feel of those grips Bawanna. Still love the way they look and how perfect they feel in my hand.

Thanks! Glad to hear you're back on your feet. I think you'll find you've been missed around here.

Thank you! The feeling is mutual, been a tough time driving the nurses insane with one question. When can I get OUTTA HERE! I have to say getting old is a Beach. More replacement parts in me these days than originals it seems. Maybe should get some of your great craftsmen here to design and hand make the next replacement parts. At least I would be sure of quality materials and craftsmanship then. Hardwood, Stone, Steel, Leather and the like, not the plastic mess they put in there the first time. :D
