Rick and I did an overnighter together last night. Rick went minimalist bringing with him only his cloths, a spare wool anorak, his big honking knife and a maxpedition waterbottle holder kit. This was for an overnight stay in minus 15oC (5 degree F) temperatures. I brought a 60L pack full of crap.

The first video is of Rick demonstrating his basic lean-to shelter and long fire set up. True to his skills demo, Rick refused any of the wood I cut up with my saw. He wanted to do all his wood gathering with just his hands and his wilder-tool. I was pretty damn surprised about the size of tree's he took down with his knife for his long fire!

I made a second video of myself being a panzy with tarp/sleeping bag and a pile of food. My video is still uploading, but here is Rick's video for your edu-tainment. I'll attach the other video to this thread later.

cool video... looks like a great time.. though a little on the cold side for me..:o

At what point did Rick ask you to lube his hand bearing?

TF

I was a little worried when he mentioned sticking a heated nalgene bottle in his backside half way through the video night scene, but fortunately the stimulus left him sufficiently content :D

Nice job guys! I like that sleeping area, it seems like a nice quick option. Could you have also made a roof or a blanket out of bound phragmites?

John, he was debating it but decided not, but I'll let Rick respond himself on the subject.

Ken was playing hard to get all night.

Great job on the video, Ken. Thanks for editing out the parts when I ran back to the car and cranked the heat! I had a good time... and again thank you for documenting the outing. My camera was good for a half dozen shots before the battery died. I look forward to your video... I tried to listen in on you from across the way... but it was all mumbles in the distance.

Yes John, I had thought about doing that... not so much the blanket, because of the fire but the lean-to overhang was quite doable.

Very cool. Or should I say cold...

I am jealous of the lack of snow you guys have on the ground!

Rick, your mentor would probably call you an idiot for not using the buck saw that was offered to you.. ;)

But boy, you are quite efficient with that big knife!

Great job, Rick. That was a cool vid, and a great demo. Big choppers? Yeah, I love's me some big choppin' knives. Good work, thanks for sharing.

That was excellent!

Impressive tree felling too.

Great video's. Looks like Rick made a nice napping spot.

Video #1 @ 6:10. That's a good way to blow out a disk in your back. More-so as you age. I keep a short length of strap or thin rope to cinch around things when I need to pull something heavy. 8-10 feet of strap packs well and has a variety of uses.

Words of wisdom right there... I cringed looking back on the video, too. Ken would have had fun dragging me out of there.

I need to watch Ken's video, now.
