First post so apologies if I am in the wrong spot.
Also a new knifemaker. Been at it less than 2 years. Do both forging and stock removal. When I started, I wouldnt look at a forum and only watched one build along video so I wouldnt get confused with different techniques. As I've gotten a little better, I've branched out into some more vids but have not checked out forums until now.

I actually found this forum when I was searching for some knifemakers near me around the Asheville, NC area and found a thread, but am unable to ping any of the folks who responded to get in touch. I cant seem to figure out the messaging system here.

Just wanted to get in touch with some like minded folks as I've not yet met anyone in person who does this and of course I still have a lot to learn.
Will read around a bit here and see how goes.
Hope all had a great Christmas

Hello rob. I believe you can not message as a basic member. To do so, you need to buy into at least a gold membership.

buckle up: you will indeed get a range of different perspectives (all good though). :-)

Well that makes sense then. I was feeling like quite the DA for not being able to figure out the messaging system.
and yes.... hence why I steered clear of forums until I had some kind of base of knowledge in what I'm doing...haha.
I've learned a lot along the last couple years and figured out what works for me at this stage. I'm not interested in selling any, I just make whatever comes to mind. Also have some some bottle openers, roses, little trinkets and a damascus ring recently. Just having fun trying different things. Was doing the other trinkets for gifts and now I have 6 knives in various stages of 'done' that I need to concentrate on when the weather gets above freezing.
Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, well ... don’t ask me how I became aware of the limits on messages (and for posting pictures) put on the basic membership :-)

looking forward to seeing some of your work!

My work is still in its infancy...;) as mentioned, I've only been at this for a short time and just as a hobby...
...was going to post a pic, but I only have images stored locally so dont have a url. Hmm... maybe another Gold Member benefit?

Welcome Rob. Lots of info on this outfit!
Thank you, sir. Seems I need to upgrade membership to take advantage of some of it though. Was especially interested in getting in contact with someone local to me and of course the classifieds section for supplies and such.

Rob - Horsewright is one of our local Wizards- a wealth of very practical hints and tricks. Good thing you caught his attention :-)

You dont need any kind of membership to post pictures just an image hosting site like imgur. I dont think gold membership gives you the ability to host pictures directly ? If im wrong somebody can correct me. A knifemaker membership does give you the ability to post pictures.

Have you seen this http://www.ncknifeguild.com/home.html

Yes, sir... I did see that, but seemed most of the members were a fair bit away from where I'm at. I used to use Photobucket to host, but since they changed policy and require you to pay, I said 'P' on 'em. So now I just keep pics locally.

I have a gold membership, and post photos directly to the site all the time. ....Dont use or have access to any photo hosting site...... Sounds like a basic membership can get by if using a hosting site??

I knew a "Rob in NC" that was into airguns, and chance you were on the Yellow forum and Talonairgun?

Welcome to Shop Talk. There are a lot of good makers in your area. Also, Haywood Community College is 25 miles away from you, where they hold Knifemaking classes and hammer-ins. Many of the accomplished smiths/makers in the area are at the classes as teachers and students. Sadly, one of the best, Tommy McNabb passed away recently.

Yes, sir...one in the same! Had seen you were on here and looked through your gallery. Noted that you now are doing folders. New level of precision there! Either you were not making them when you were over on the Yellow and Talon forum or you just didnt post any there.
Hope you are doing well, sir! I'm not as active on the Yellow and Talon, but do lurk there a bit and post a bit on AGN. Hadnt seen the name WOK pop up there in a long time.

Thank you, sir. I'll look into the class, if for no other reason than to meet some folks. Saw a thread from several years back here and had lots of local folks pop up. Dont know if any of those are active or not.

Hi Rob,
Good to see you. I still make the Wokbutt and Wokguard for Tony at Talon Tunes and have turned my time toward knife making about 9 years ago. Have not been active on the forum for a few years.

Got bored making 3 piece knives, aka blade and 2 scales, and concentrating on slipjoints which of course are very challenging.

If you have any questions about stock removal knifemaking feel free to DM me, I have made all the mistakes and may be able to shorten the learning curve for you.

Welcome from the PNW, Rob. Because you mentioned forging, I'll add my standard suggestion, which is to join your local blacksmithing organization, and attend as many functions when possible. You'll probably meet some 'local' bladesmiths that don't participate in online forums, especially if they are older than you and me...
