Morning, folks

Hi Rob,
Good to see you. I still make the Wokbutt and Wokguard for Tony at Talon Tunes and have turned my time toward knife making about 9 years ago. Have not been active on the forum for a few years.

Got bored making 3 piece knives, aka blade and 2 scales, and concentrating on slipjoints which of course are very challenging.

If you have any questions about stock removal knifemaking feel free to DM me, I have made all the mistakes and may be able to shorten the learning curve for you.

I've done several hidden tang knives as well as the '3 piece' as you say.... dont know that I'll ever hit the point of doing much else...haha.
Appreciate the offer and I'm sure I'll be yakking at you!

Welcome from the PNW, Rob. Because you mentioned forging, I'll add my standard suggestion, which is to join your local blacksmithing organization, and attend as many functions when possible. You'll probably meet some 'local' bladesmiths that don't participate in online forums, especially if they are older than you and me...
Thank you, sir... and that is a valid suggestion for sure. I know there are such around here. I was bent on learning it on my own, but I know there could be a ton could be gleaned from spending a day in the forge with someone.

Hi Rob. I'm in Wilson, NC, but there is an NC knife making guild that you might want to check out. I'm sure there is a member somewhere near you who wouldn't mind helping you out anyway they could. They also hold knife making classes at Montgomery community college in Troy, NC from time to time.

Thank you, sir... yes, I've checked out the knifemaker guild and seems most of those folks are out your way. I'm way west of you, closer to Asheville. Actually, where I live it's near as close to go to Johnson City, TN as it is Asheville it seems. I'm sure I'll come across a few folks here local!

Haahaa, we all thought that when we began.

BTW get on Instagram, Everybody who is anyone in knifemaking is on it. Many great makers post their WIP and samples of their work. It is a good way to network with other knifemakers and most are willing to answer a question.

Honestly.... I have such an aversion to Social Media... forums is as far as I go. I dont have Facebook, Twitter or any thing else. I know I miss out on a lot, but just cant do it...haha
and yes, I'm seeing some parallels here with this an airguns. Start small, next thing you know, you end up with a room...or two... full. In the last two years I have gone from a file to a 1x30 to a 2x42 to a 2x72 to a dedicated workshop out at the woods near my range and then a dedicated forge out by the workshop. Just need a fridge out there and wife will never see me!

I hear you, brother. All the more reason to get active with either the NC Chapter of ABANA (https://ncabana.org/) or the Foothills of the Carolinas Blacksmith Guild, based in Mill Spring, just NE of Columbus. Here's their link (unfortunately, it looks like they are on Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/FCarBG/

That looks interesting.... need to practice a bit more on my own so as not to embarrass myself meeting 'real' smiths..haha. Counterproductive, I know, but cant help it! Hadnt seen the ABANA group so appreciate that, sir!

Hello from Lake Lure NC

I am a new maker like you a couple years into the hobby. Several solid instructors down this way (Gerry Drew and Billy Salyers) that have classes at Tryon Arts and Craft school just a short drive from Asheville.

Prior to CoviD we have had several get togethers and Billy has held solid hammer ins at his shop. Hope to see more in 2021
