I realize I may be asking a simple question that requires a rather complex answer, but can anyone give me the basics of forging mosaic damacus?
thanks in advance

There is a very simple answer:
CSWDTCWFWD....

Once you weld up the can, you slice it up (various ways), stack it, weld it, manipulate it, etc.

There is a fairly good video by Ed Caffrey on making Mosaic Damascus.

I'm with the other guys on the recommendation of Ed's DVD.

That said, it would be difficult to answer your question as it stands anyway. There are multiple methods for making mosaics, and which is used depends on the preferred end result. You can go with powder in a can, or solids in a can, or purely forged mosaics. There are questions of initial lay-up, required manipulations to make the type of pattern you're hunting for, and then at least 5 methods I know of to bring the mosaic out to the surface of the blade.

The very basic answer would be:
  1. Make a pattern that is visible in the end of a bar
  2. Expose that pattern to the side by accordian cutting, tiling, tiling with powdered steel, etc

If you could narrow the question a bit (I'm sure that there is some mosaic pattern that has spawned your question) it would be a little easier to answer in a useful way.
