Mosaic pins

I just tried making some. I used a 1/4" tube with 6 hollow ss 1/16 and a 1/16" brass pin in the middle. I ground some away and have some hollow spots. Is this useless or can I add some blackened epoxy when I am almost finished with the handle? I would like to start making my own.

if you need to add filler epoxy on an end, i recommend swabbing the surface in there with a solvent and blowing dry to degrease, just on the off chance your fill would pop out later.

Hey Candid, nice to see ya around here. That makes sense to me. Thanks for the tip.

Frank did you fill the tube or vacuum up from the bottom.

I tried to inject the smaller ones. Before that I filled the tube about 1/3 of the way up and then slowly but quickly sunk the pins in. No vacume. I made a nice sticky mess.

The best way is to get a cheap hand vacuum pump from harbor freight and suck the exopy up from the bottom. Then clamp off the rubber tubeing till the epoxy sets.

That's the one I was talking about,go to the hardware store and get some clear tubing and just as you draw the epoxy into the tube clamp it off and let it set.I also put a bit of tape over the open end.

Along those lines has anyone figured out exactly how much epoxy it takes to fill one of these foot long tubes? I usually end up with too much becasue I am always afraid of not having enough!
I keep saying I am going to measure it out so I don't have as much waste, till the next time and there I sit with a bunch of leftover epoxy!

A 12"X.25 tube has .5 CuIn volume =8cc. With the filler rods, I would estimate the epoxy volume to be about 2cc. Mixing 4 grams should be more than enough, but I would do 6gm. to be sure.

Thanks stacy!

I got another question. I have saw some mosaic pins that have more than one color in them. I would ass u me  that they are making up the tube with the various smaller tubes and them blocking the ones they want to be a different color. After drawing in the first color and once the epoxy dries they go back and unblock the other tubes and draw in the other color.

Does this sound about right? If someone out there has done this process or knows for sure how it is done please explain!

Whats funny is when you do finally order the supplies needed to make your own, it seems like you gotta buy a lifetime supply... Never thought I would need 25 ft of .031 stainless rod....:p

To me its like a lot of these things....if you count your time and labor in putting these together, is it really a huge savings ??

I bought 6 from Sheffield and it was $150 delivered, and then thought I could probably do these myself for a little less money, so I picked up the materials. Now I'm wondering if in the end I will really be saving that much....;)

+1 on this<I made a few and found it cheaper and easier for the few I use just to buy them.

Mosaic pins were cool in 1976.
Now they are rather common and overused.
