With the help from several Blade Forum members, I have been able to compose a list of the top ten candidates for our “Most Beautiful Ivory Handle” title from all the photos posted to our thread.

These ten ivory handles were clear favorites as they were listed multiple times on these member’s top ten list.

I have re-posted the photos and created a poll listing the top ten. Please vote for your favorite. A winner will be declared “Most Beautiful Ivory Handle” after one week of voting.

Remember, we are voting for the most beautiful ivory handle, not most beautiful knife with an ivory handle.

So Ivory color, texture, shape, contour, carving and the maker's use of it along with other handle components should be considered.

Thank you for your participation.

The Poll says I cannot vote. I would have voted for the Sanders Folder. I like the complexity of the colors. That's the best way I can think to describe why I like that one.

Hey guys, FYI, Ivory is white.

Maybe you should have a thread on fossil vs. non-fossil?

For the record from the American Heritage dictionary.

Ivory
A hard, smooth, yellowish-white substance composed primarily of dentin that forms the tusks of the elephant.
A similar substance forming the tusks or teeth of certain other mammals, such as the walrus.

Yup you guys have to be paying members to vote(unless I am mistaken?). I voted for the Hanson Hunter but would be proud to own any of them.

Looking at the pol results, it raised me a doubt, do you vote for the best piece of ivory or the best ivory handle?
Horacio

I voted for the Hanson hunter as well.
But as was previously mentioned, any of these amazing pieces would be the cat's meow.

We are judging the most beautiful ivory handle, not knife or ivory alone.

So Ivory color, texture, shape, contour, carving and the maker's use of it along with other handle components should be considered.

I will edit my original post to clearify.

I am starting to think that Don Hanson III is making this stuff in his basement. Does anyone else see the familiy resemblence between the Cavity Bowie handle and the his hunter handle? I think they might BOTH be from the same tusk. Fess up Don! ;)

I vote "none of the above" because you left out the WHITE ivory Hanson bowie with the fingergroove handle. I am one of those wet blanket types that thinks that ivory should be IVORY colored and not blue, green, brown, etc. Those colors should be reserved for stag, wood or synthetics.:D But i had to pick one, so I will go with the Montejano.......sorry Don......lol. Put up a pic of one of the 3000 layer blades and I will vote for it immediately. As far as KNIVES go, picking is almost imposible because they are all gorgeous, but not because of the fossil ivory alone. I have one ivory handled knife. It is a Fitch guardless ladder pattern fighter with a natural ivory colored fossil handle. Very nice and NO BLUE OR GREEN!!!!!! lol

Peter, I think you're right. Not about making ivory in my basement, I don't have a basement;) But these two may have come of the same tusk.

The Montegano is kinda ivory colored;) I couldn't put all Don's ivory up there :o :D

True.......i agree with some of the comments on here that Don is the currrent King of All Ivory. He can grind a tusk eight ways to Sunday:D I will eventually aquire one of his bowies.........when I recover from my 2006 knife purchases and get out of the cutlery poorhouse...lol. Keep up the good work, Don. You have inspired me. I eventually want to handle a knife similar to that big bowie I showed you (a better one without the warts, of course...lol) either in pre-ban elephant ivory or a straight upper hippo tooth.

Though I voted I feel each piece represented has it's own first place beauty. It is almost not fair to have to select one over the rest.

I agree. It was very hard coming up with the most popular ten from all the dozens of great knives posted to the preliminary ivory handle thread.

I am starting to think that Don Hanson III is making this stuff in his basement.

I am not sure if Don has any moonshiners or counterfeiters back in the family tree, but I happened out to his shop right after he had run off a batch last year when he wasn't expecting me.
He doesn't have a basement, Peter, but some of us suspect he is using a cave up at the end of Steam Mill Hollow to produce all of this ivory you just don't normally see in one place.

Our local sheriff's department has been staking his place out, but he is a tough one to catch! :D
