Most Common Knives and Why

I'd say the top five most common knives are:
)Vic recruit/classic
)buck 110
)kershaw leek
)case stockman
)leatherman

I'd say the thing these knives all share (and what makes them sell so well) is quality, affordability, and availability.

Just curious about which knives are very common (like the Mora) and why?
Moras, Opinels, and SAKs are common because they're well made and cheap.
Off-brand kitchen knives are common because they get the job done, and they're cheap.
Various regional patterns, (think machetes and agricultural knives,) are common for the same reason.
Crappy MTechs, United Cutlery's, Taylor's, Frost's, e.t.c, are common because they're cool looking and cheap.

There is a common factor here.

id say the most common brands (at least the most i see) are: Buck, Kershaw and Leatherman

I assume most people just purchase whatever walmart has in stock. Not a knock on any of those brands, just an observation.

Availability and price probably determine what knives are popular more than anything else. It's easy to forget that there's honestly not much of a demand for quality cutlery out there. I would honestly be fairly surprised if Moras really rank as a popular knife. They seem ubiquitous in our world, but I've only ever seen them at cutlery shops, never big box stores or the like.

SAKs. I know tons of people who aren't into knives at all, but still carry a SAK. Working in retail, I also regularly see people pull their keys out of their pockets while getting their cash or credit card, and I see a lot of SAKs on keychains, a lot more than I see pocket clips or sheaths of any sort.

Dexter-Russel (largest in the US) and Ontario?

Mora produces around 700 000 knives per year and I believe Leatherman sells around a 1 000 000.

Victorinox is said to be one of the strongest brandnames in the world,so they have to be high on the list.

Oh yeah, can't forget Gerber. Especially the Bear Grylls stuff! Because he's the ultimate survivalist mmmm warm mug of pee.

Kitchen Knives, Fishing knives, Butchering knives, box cutters...

I doubt any kind of pocket folding knife cracks the top 5.

I would guess Victorinox SAKs are the most commonly carried pocket knives. They're inexpensive, familiar to most people, and provide a lot of utility.

Buck 110 because its cool...

I would say Swiss Army knife, and if I had to say a particular model, probably the little tiny keychain one. You see those things everywhere.

Victorinox and Wenger, although it's pretty rare to see them referred to by their brand names, since most people just know them as Swiss Army Knives.
