Most common pin sizes

hi all,
I'm making a small, custom, anvil-like-object, for beating on.

Before it gets spring tempered, I want to drill a bunch of holes in it, to fit various sized pins (in case I need to beat on something, but need a hole for the bar stock to fit in).

What are the most common pins out there, that people use? Anything for slip joints to straight blades.

Thanks!

The only time I can imagine using an anvil with a hole like you imagine would be tapping a pin in or tapping it out. To tap them out I use the hardy hole or mousehole on my anvil. To tap them in and have clearance on the bottom side, I use several washers stacked together on my desk.

But to answer your question, it all depends on what you like to use. Everyone uses different size pins for different tasks. I use 1/16 for hidden pins, 3/32 for folers, multiple 1/16 pins for G10 bolsters, 1/8 for metal bolsters, and 3/16 or 1/4 for peened pins. As well as 1/4 and 5/16 for corby bolts.

I have also used 5/32 and a few other sizes. There is no reason to have several sizes. Just drill one 3/8" hole and use that for everything.

I use 1/8, 3/16, 1/4. I use a bench block designed for working on 1911 pistols as my base for tapping pins in or out. It's a hard plastic material so it doesn't scratch things up.
