Helleo Again,

I am very new to knifemaking and I just was wondering what are the most common belt grits you all use. I bought a bunch of them and only seem to be using some of them. I been using 60 and 80 for grinding/shaping(will be ordering some 36 grit soon because 60 grit seems to take forever). I been trying 120 and 240 on setting an edge and sharpening. Then finishing off with 600 grit. What grits do you all use for such: Grinding, Sharpening and Finishing.

Thanks,

David

How bout: The mustard yellow 50 grit 3M belts, 100 grit gator belts, AKA "A100" and the A65 which is the 320 grit, followed up by the Trizact 1200 grit for a nice satin finish. Ok maybe not the most often used. Works great though. :D

My most used belt is 60 grit for hogging and general shaping and stuff. I dont use any grits lower than 60 because they just don't last as long and only do their work slightly faster. I also have less problems getting out any 'extra deep' scratches when finishing a blade when 60 is the lowest that I go.

Close to what I use, I stopped using the 40's because of deep scratches. I use 50 then 100 then 180

I mostly use 50/60/80 (whatever is around and cheap) and go straight to 400. I like to use some 120's and also some micron belts, a cork belt and some scotch-brite belts, I prefer the green/blue ones which are "fine" not super fine. I've found that the trizact finishing belts are quite nice and will probably be moving toward those for some things.

I also use 50's The Blaze belts cut like the next bigger grit, but i found that they didn't last that much longerthan zirconia, so it was kind of hard to justify the price. One of the most useful belts that I found when I was using a 2 x 48 grinder were the Norton 100 grit zirconia belts, but I haven't been able to find them in 72. The leave a finish almost as good as the 120's, they last longer and they have the thick backing so they don't bump. Only downside is they don't roll over the edge of the platen as easily as the thin AO belts. Anyone know who carries them in 2 x 72?

I would have to believe that the 220X is about the most commonly used belt in peoples line up. To this I add 36X, 80X, 400X and 600X. Gosh, if I had a dollar for every belt I have used up... I could buy a whole bunch of belts!;)

Knock of the scale and remove forge pits with 40grit, then 80 and 120 after heat treatment, anything higher is done with sandpaper then waterstones.

50g for roughing out and profiling.

120g for final profiling and truing up the grinds.

220g for finishing up prior to stamping and HT, and for scale clean up after HT.

320, 400, for finishing prior to using scotch brite belts for satin finish.

600 g and 9 micron prior to the buffing wheel for a mirror finish.

I haven't tried blaze yet. I use mostly 36, 60, 120 grit klingspor zirc belts, and 80, 120, 320 and 400 j belts
