Most Efficient Number of Knives to Carry, Maximum Potential, Minimum Waste

I think 3 is a nice round number. I go with an Eswing hatchet, K-bar, and multi-tool, but then, I'm obviously not as well funded as you guys. I'd love to be able to afford A Chris Reeve, much less several. I think a trout knife would be good too, but I've been using a cuthroat razor for most of those uses.
I might have mentioned before that I don't see how small knives weigh you down much. Sure, there's a practical limit to this, but something the size of a skinner, or neck knife isn't going to make the difference between being able to float, and sinking like a stone.
As for the big things like a 6' Booee, or two bit hewing axe, that's a different story. I could conscience having one of each, though.
The bare minimum, though would have to be a big Bowie, or axe, skinner, and pocket toolbox.

Everyday I carry a penknife: sliplock, two bladed, classic type.

Out and about in the yard I carry a Leatherman Wave.

When I was soldiering I carried a SAK Huntsman, small Blackjack lockback folder and a CR Project. These are personal kit items as anything more would be issued or blown up; for these are the days of manouever warfare. Every Martindale gollock I've owned has been borrowed and never returned.

When at a shooting party I carry an Al Mar Gun Stock backlock folder and my SAK.
If out stalking a Harry Boden 4 1/2 inch hunter and SAK. I've yet to find my perfect hunter.
When doing vermin control I have the smallest Gerber camp axe to lob off rabbit feet and some game snips/scissors. Almost always my Project finds its way into my game bag.

If playing survival in the woods I have a pack with either a Blackjack Marauder II or Gransfors Bruks small forest axe. Plus my army kit. Sometimes a Gerber folding saw or better still a bow saw goes out too. If its real work I borrow a chain saw.

Knives I would like are a fancy hunter, a wild boar hunting blade, a small CR Sebenza, a Busse BM, a quality machete and a good WWI style Kukuri. But then this is guilding the lily and I don't have to have any of them as its doubling up. I do need a good pair of game snips.

Knives I like but don't see much use anymore are a Cold Steel Master Tanto, Al Mar Sere Attack folder, Benchmade Spike and Leapard Cub. Anything else I might have are mistakes that don't work for me.

First, an ax, preferably a 3/4 size single bit; a SAK; and either a sturdy folder or small to medium fixed blade (Marble's Fieldcraft or Campcraft).

Outdoor Activities that will take me away
from vehicle (fishing/hunting/hiking/etc)
1 small pocket knife ~2.5-3" blade
1 fixed blade sheath knife 5.5" blade
(to meet Tx. carry laws, would prefer larger
blade)

Overnite hiking/camping
Would add hatchet to the above.

What a timely question as I am now putting together MY ultimate combo, to wit:

1) BK&T Brute
2) Busse Basic 5 or comparable
3) Ray Kirk Hard Wirk (4.5" spear point fixed blade w/ micarta scales)
4) BM 710 in M2

The Busse and Hard Wirk are probably redundant, but I would abuse the Busse and use the Wirk (plus I just like 'em). FWIW, I only have the BM at this writing but expect/hope to acquire the rest by the end of summer (maybe even as soon as the Blade show Hotlanta :D )

So many combinations, so little money.:) Hows bout a V-nox Soldier, CRK Mountaineer I, and a Norlund belt axe.
Or maybe a V-nox Rucksack, Sebenza, and Norlund belt axe.

Do you notice a recurring theme here?
