...is freehand on a small wheel, 4" in this case. I remembered Bruce Bump saying how he liked hollow grinding in a thread on his forum. Since tonight I needed some "fun" in the shop, I picked up this one and gave it a go.

Just as I remembered, FUN! :D
Of course doing the other side the same way might not be as fun. ;)

What's you preferred aka FUN way to grind?

I surely like your deep grinding, Pat !!! That's a real sexy looking blade that excites me even without seeing any sort of handle. For me controlled grind curves like that talk to me of real artistic adventures !!! Frank

I did my first hollow ground knife last week and admit the curves are sexy.

That is a very sexy knife Patrice! Ooh la lah! :D

I have twenty or so knives in progress, maybe I should start another tonight! Maybe grind out a 10" bladed Persian style double hollow fighter? :D :p

I also enjoy profiling with a low grit belt on stock removal blades. It's pretty sweet watching steel rip off as fast as you want it to.

Looks good Patrice. That top grind is a challenge with a 2" wide wheel. See if You can turn down another wheel to 1" wide and use 1" wide belts for the top grinds that have a curved tip and spine like this blade.

You guys are so nice.

Brian, please start on the Persian. So much fun...in a stressful kind of way. ;)

Frank, I am sorry but when you see it with the handle you might feel less excited. I went on a trek outside the box for this one. That's where I am most comfortable. :o

Bruce, I appreciate the tip. 1" wheel just made it to the top of my tools to get/make list.

Butch, funny that you mention it cause I was thinking about you while grinding this and how much fun you must have. :D

Thanks again for the good words guys and don't be afraid to show YOUR fun grinds.

Good lookin blade Patrice!

For me it has to be the razors as well, grinding a 8/8+ half-hollow freehand after heat treat sure is an excercize in total focus!

Next to that, it has to be my mini knives, .035" thick stock and trying to get a good plunge line without buzzing your fingernails off is a new kind of fun!

you need a bump file guide to save those nails :)

I am not sure I agree with your style of " fun." I do mostly hollow grinds on an 8" wheel. That top grind of yours would scare the crap out of me. Have fun and keep us posted. Looks like an interesting blade.

Patrice very nice grinds, that blade looks vicious!! I use a 8" serrated wheel and absolutely love hollow grinding, I was taught a freehand style, that incorporates some body movement. My next wheel will be a 12.
Here is dbl hollow fighter in 5/32" ATS-34.

Show off.... How about you come over and bring that knife so I can see a double hollow in hand. I'll draw up a persian fighter right now. :D

Is that a sub-hilt Greg?

LOL, If you got beer ill fire the diesel!!
No sub Brian, are u kidding thats prolly my third dbl hollow, and first fighter!

Patrice, that thing is looking wicked!!! Super nice....and fun!

Greg, that double edged fighter looks great!!!

Thanks for the good words guys.

Greg, that is some sweet grinding right there.
The serrated wheel looks interesting. Can I ask the advantages over a solid wheel, other than it probably runs cooler.

everything i have bee told is yes they run cooler and also they hog faster but the sutface finish is not as smooth (might be a different story with a thick belt like a gator tho)
i run plain soild wheels. razors dont need the hogging as much as the smooth easy to control finish

Looking good Patrice!

My favorite grinds in general are the different tantos I do. Compound grinds are a fun challenge.

I really enjoy trying to keep everything crisp and making the yokote line well defined.
